Is the hard disk detectable in the cmos setup? to know how to enter the cmos setup look for the press "DEL / F2 / F10 to enter setup when you power up the pc. check for the boot option under cmos and check the hdd if cmos can detect it. otherwise hard drive has a problem. if hard drive is detectable, try reinstalling windows xp. other means is to check boot sequence by pressing F11 during start up. this will display the option on which you would like to boot from.

Your data is already gone. The drive is raw. No partition no format.
here is a link to a free data recovery program, this probably wont work but may be worth a try

just be sure to opt out of all garbage they want to infest your computer with.

I dropped my hard disk and i need help on how to fix it

I have bad news for you, the hard disk is faulty and cannot be fixed by mortals like you and me.
Hard disks do not like being dropped and this is a sure way of damaging them.
There are companies that can retrieve data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.
You can find these companies on the Internet, use Google to search for them.

But If Hard disk drive is not detected change data cable, power cable of Hard disk.If hard disk is detected in bios follow upper rules. And if it is not detected again you should walk into Hard disk repairing center and check hard disk there.

Try to hear if the hard drive is spinning. If yes then open Disk Management. 1. Open the Control Panel 2. Open Administatice Tools 3. Open Computer Management 4. Choice Disk Management.
Check if you can see the hard drive there if not is probably dead.

When i turn it on it has a disk read error occurred message

The Toshiba cannot find a boot disk, this problem could be caused by the BIOS could not detect the hard drive because has lost the configuration or the hard drive is faulty or the disk controller is faulty.
Check the BIOS configuration to see if it has detected the hard disk and some BIOS have a utility to test the hard disk, if this is available then run the hard disk test.
Another way to test the hard disk, remove the hard disk from the laptop and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port. If this computer see it as and external hard drive and you can open the folders and files the the hard drive is OK and the fault is most likely the laptop's motherboard.
If the computer cannot detect or open the files on the external USB adapter then the hard drive is faulty. The hard drive needs to be replaced in the Toshiba and Windows installed to get the laptop working again.
