    Processing or boot up?

    XP or Vista?

    How much RAM / memory?

    CPU is what size?

You may have far too much "STUFF" running in the back ground. You may also need to defragment the computer once a month.

How much space is left on the Hard Drive?

It may well be some form of virus or spyware.

It may also be that you have too many applications running at once eg. lots of toolbars and instant message typ programs.

It can also happen on graphic intensive applications.

You should rule out nasty stuff first.

MBAM !

for a free one its pretty darned good !

From a CLEAN computer download and put on a flash drive.

Copy to your DESKTOP on the suspec computer.

Run it but dont change any options just use what it offers.

When its done let it clean anything it finds.

Its where I always start with an infected machine.

As for antivirus AVOID Norton or Mcafee but try the AVG FREE version MBAM should clean up without buying

Only continued use would require purchase As for too many applications that would be up to you to decide what you REALLY need and dont. Most toolbars are a waste of both time and space and can hog computers down. Maybe a good clean up is in order ?

It may just be a "leaking application"

These are badly coded programs that dont release memory when they should and just keep taking more to do the same job.

May I suggest you download
"hijackthis"

It is a program that can make a report on what you have running in such a way that you can post that information to certain sites and experts there will look at it.

They will then give you reccomendations as to how you can remove programs or fix some issues that may be upsetting your computer.

Dont post the log here but follow the nstructions and help the program offers to send it to one of the sites it will offer you.

If you understand startup lists you may even be able to spot som things yourself that you dont want to run and disable them from hijack this.

Install an run a current and reliable antivirus software; if that does doesnt help, free up space on the hard drive. If it doenst help try re-installing operating system software. No improvement? then u might need a partial or total system upgrade.

You did not state the make and model of your computer so I can only recommend generic checks. When was the last time you ran disk defragmentation? A fragmented disk will slow down system operations. What operating system are you using and are you performing regular system updates? How much memory does the computer have? Windows XP SP1 ran well on 512Mb of memory, but after upgrading to SP3, you require at least 1Gb to run with any effeciency. How big is your hard drive and how much data free space is available? If your system is low on memory and your hard drive is almost full, paging (moving data from memory to hard drive and back to memory) is impacted, and will slow down the system. What speed Internet connection do you have? Dial up is much slower than broadband or DSL. Lastly, what browser are you using and do you regularily delete the temp internet files?
All of the above items will have a direct impact on your system operations. Also, make sure you are running a good antivirus program and perform regular scans. It is possible that you have a virus that is using your machine as a "zombie" and eating up your bandwidth sending spam.

Tip

Clean your CPU Tower every once in a while.

If you want your computer smooth and to not make alot of noises, clean the CPU Tower. Dust can collect in the fans and slow the fans down.

Can windows xp be installed on a etower 333 cs

In short. NO
this pc has a maximum memory capacity of 256mb.
With the maximum memory installed and a bigger hard drive it would run with windows xp, but would be very slow, but with 2nd user pc so cheap you could buy a cheap tower/screen/kb and mouse very cheap.
check ebay

The serial # is not found on the tower case

I'm not sure where you got this tower, but if the serial number isn't on the tower chances are it's been tampered with or stolen by the person you got it from. (This is just a guess)

Call customer service and keep pounding zero until you get a human. Ask them where the serial is on the tower.

There are stories I've heard of people taking a PC and opening it and replacing the fast processor with a slower one and selling it to unsuspecting people.

All that said.. Your Pentium II should work just fine with XP unless the processor is very very slow.. In which case you might want to just buy a new PC since they've reached the floor in pricing.

PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

Now .. that means you can have ANY processor as long as it's compatible and runs at 300 Mhz or higher.. Meaning near anything still running to this day will practically work.

OptiPlex GX270 mini tower

Remove the 256mb memory and insert the 512mb memory in slot1 and see whether it works. Please note that the memory needs to be in pairs.

I think the GX260 is mini tower has two different moles
1) PC3200 compatible with memory - 184 Pin DDR3200 400MHz

2) PC2700 compatible with memory -184 Pin DDR2700 333MHz

Please enter the service tag on dell.com and find the manual and the right memory for your PC

All the best!

I have a packardbell 1 media 5057 computer which I have had for app. five years and it is running slow. Is there anything I can do to update it or would it be better to get a new tower and if so which...

XP machine from the factory? If so, first run a VALID spyware cleaner such as Spybot S&D from Safer-Networking.org After this, see what's running in the system tray. If there are unwanted programs running that you never use, go into Control Panel and remove them. Leave anything related to graphics or sound alone. Machine will be much quicker. If this is a pre-XP machine which has been upgraded, the mainboard was probably designed for Win98 and will be dead slow running current software. Also, XP needs at least 512 mb to run properly. Incidentally, I have 2 Lenovo machines I use myself, and a constant stream of Dells and HPs coming in to be fixed, so draw your own conclusions.

Upgrade

Hello,

Thank you for the information. Please find the CPUs supported by the Motherboard of your computer below.

Duron: 1.6 - 1.8 GHz at FSB 266 MHz
Athlon XP:
Palomi** Core: 1500+ - 2100+ at FSB 266 MHz
Thoroughbred Core: 1700+ - 2700+ at FSB 266/333 MHz
Barton Core: 2500+ - 3200+ at FSB 333 MHz
2500+ - 3200+ at FSB 400 MHz

Sempron: 3000 + and up
I see that the present processor is requires ** upgrade as it is one of the best match availble for this motherboard. However, you can upgrade the Memory to 2 GB using two 1GB
DDR 266/333/400 modules to improve the system perform performance. Also, you can consider for a video card upgrade. Your computer supports both AGP and PCI video cards.

Also, you can download the maunal for the motherboard of your computer from the link below for your referance.
