Ok my friend this happend to me. if a desktop get an add in pci card. notebook, go and get a usb pcmcia card if you have a slot on the problem unit. (or express card) whatever yours has. use external keyboard+mouse and you can at least use it again. good luck .

That wont do him any good now that he has tried to reinstall XP.

Try entering the BIOS by tapping either F1 or F2 when you first push the power button. There should be a HARD DRIVE self test somewhere in there. Perhaps a Diagnostic or Tools section.
If it passes that see if there is a mem (RAM) test. You might have to take the mem out and test one at a time.

There is a known issue with some tablet notebooks that if you turn it off the the screen in one position and then turn it back on with the screen in the other the keyboard and touchpad don't work.

Also before you ever resort to a reinstall, try getting a command prompt up and run sfc /scannow.

Which model of laptop ?

Nearly every device in your computer system can be turned off and on by accessing the Windows Device Manager with a few clicks of the mouse. It gives you plenty of flexibility and allows you to customize your computer on a whim. The Device Manager will allow you to enable your factory keyboard and mouse and disable your current ones, effectively resetting them to the default settings

Make sure that your default mouse and keyboard are plugged into your computer. Click on the Windows "Start" button in the lower right corner of your desktop. Type "Device Manager" in the "Start Search" box. Click "Device Manager" under "Programs." Click "Continue" if the Windows permission window pops up. Click the "+" next to "Mice and other pointing devices." Right-click the default mouse and click "Enable." Switch to your default mouse then right-click your other mouse and click "Disable." Click "Yes" in the warning popup window. Unplug the other mouse. Press the "+" next to "Keyboards." Right-click your default keyboard and click "Properties." Click the "Driver" tab then click "Enable." Click "OK." Right-click your other keyboard and select "Properties." Click the driver tab then click "Disable." Click "Yes" in the permission window then click "OK." Your computer is reset to the default keyboard and mouse.

Laptop Touch Pad will not work

if you plug usb keyboard onto your laptop it will probably turn the touch pad off.
If no other keyboard is attached there is usually a switch to turn off the touch pad.
also if you attach a mouse this may disable the touchpad so you dont move the mouse pointer when you are typing

Touch pad and mouse butons don't work at all.

On laptops, sometimes your TouchPad is disabled for no apparent reason. To reactivate it, first try restarting your PC. If there’s no good change just try:

We need the software driver and your mouse are installed

This trick works in Windows XP and Vista
Go to Control Panel> Mouse> Settings tab of the device
Click <Enable> (or <Disable> to disable)

Please go through this image, will help you..

Notes:
On some models, there is a keyboard shortcut to activate or deactivate the touchpad. For example, a ACER, just do Fn + F7.
You can click Reset device if neither of those solutions will work. ..

Please revert for further clarification....

Keyboard locks randomly after login

Sound like you might have a virus - try running antivirus program - such as Avast or Antivir - which is free.
If that doesn't work, then try doing a System Restore - if that doesn't work, then do a System Recovery complete re-install - but back up your pictures and documents first as you will lose everything and you'll be starting over again fresh.

Keyboard and mouse not working

it is likely the keyboard or mouse is putting out erroneous data and windows is then ignoring the ports,
try disconnecting the mouse pad or the keyboard and run with only one connected at a time if re-seating them has no effect.

there is sometimes a combo of software that may also effect the keyboard mouse input.
click on run / type msconfig
uncheck load startup group items.
click ok,
restart , check don't show this again.
and test system.

Keyboard + toucpad freezes

Might seem ovious but you may want to try Acer support and look for a new Driver.. Also check under Control Panel...Mouse options... and also check device profiles to make sure windows isn't loading a "docked profile which may disable touchpad and laptop keybaord use.
