Question about Kenmore Elite 45986 Front Load Washer
The washing machine is making a clunking noise. The drum is intact with the two springs on the top and the two shocks on the bottom. The problem is when you open the washer door the metal basket that spins seems to have become disconnected from the drum it rides in. Any ideas?
The metal basket (inner basket) has a broken spider (these are the support brackets that hold the basket to the bearing shaft). The inner basket will need to be replaced and the front and rear shell of the drum may also need to be replaced depending if any other damage has been done. It's a big job, about 2 hours for a good tech.

Vibration and clunking can be caused by a number of things,
In this case though, first check the bearings at the back of the drum, if the drum is wet and theres a grinding noise major fix.
check the concrete blocks are tightly bolted on and there are no broken springs on the machine.
Check the belt and motor tensioning.
