Just set up a recently purchased used Astoria argenta single and can't get a thick Espresso

    There could be a few things going on, is your pump pressure set correctly and if yes, is the grind set properly on your grinder.

Also, the freshness of the coffee is very important. Old stale coffee will not produce the crema like freshly roasted. Your extraction time for a long shot should be in the 20 to 25 second range.

Try adjusting the grind on the grinder to a finer setting, and make sure that the machine ins producing about 9 bars of pressure on the water pump(check bottom gauge on manometer).

You'll want to back flush the machine with espresso machine cleaning powder:

How to set the timer


Look behind the right steamwand, you will see a little toggle switch with the on label on the left. Move switch to on label then press program button, all light on keypad will be on, press button until desired amount then press same button or stop button, continue until all buttons are programed.

Astoria SAE 2 Programing


The key is that you have to HOLD the programming button in for about 5 seconds before the system will go into programming mode. All the lights will come on and you will know you are ready to program the various shot buttons.
