Q: No 5.1 from Sony DVD player?

I have a Sony and I had to enable both dolby digital 5.1 and DTS in the
player's setup meny. Note that I said player and not DVD. Imade this
mistake. You can select dts till you're blue in the faceon a DVD menu,
but won't get it if you don't enable the output in theplayer's menu.
Hope this helps. I hate to say it, but youmay need to read the book
that came with your player. I did ;-)

Some suggestions, which may or may not work:

Check the receiver setup to be sure the digital input you're using for
the coax in is assigned to the input switch for the unit and the
receiver is set to check for or use a digital audio input. Check the
DVD setup menu to set it for bitstream out. Also, if you have the
analog L/R audio outs going to the receiver, disconnect them and see
if it makes a difference.
