Question about Printers & Copiers

My hp designjet 450 won't communicate with my computer. It's a new(used)plotter to me, I downloaded the driver, but no communication. A test sheet prints fine.

I don't have another cable, although I swithched ports on the computer...still nothing. Any other ideas before I buy a new cable?

  • larsen3d Feb 23, 2009

I've purchased a new parallel cable and still nothing. I've tried printing from a command prompt, wordpad and CAD, but nothing. I reinstalled the driver and it says "ready" next to the printer icon. Any ideas?

  • larsen3d Feb 23, 2009

I reinstalled my driver and still nothing. This is a new "used" plotter to me. When I first got it, I replaced the belt and got it running. I have never had this plotter run with this computer, my old dj430 worked great though.

  • larsen3d Feb 23, 2009

I checked connections, restarted both and nothing. One of you said to be careful of the order that I turn on the printer and computer. I found no info on this so I don't know the order.

  • larsen3d Feb 23, 2009

If the communication board on the plotter is bad, what is involved? Neither of the other 2 ideas applied.

  • larsen3d Feb 23, 2009

The only other devices attached to this computer are my new "pluglink" for my wireless connection and the usual computer hookups-mouse,...

  • larsen3d Feb 23, 2009

I never had a cd, as it was purchased used so I downloaded the driver from HP and installed it with the add printer wizard.

  • larsen3d Feb 23, 2009

The other computer here is on the other side of the house. It would be a big deal to unhook it, and install the driver on that one- any other ideas first?

  • larsen3d Feb 23, 2009

The printer is new to me but used- year 2000? Could I have hurt anything when I had it taken apart to replace the belt?

  • larsen3d Feb 23, 2009

My dj430 that I had installed on this computer before, "fried" from a power outage. I had my computer plugged in a power surge strip, but not the plotter. Could this have hurt the computer's port?

  • larsen3d Feb 24, 2009

This is a huge plotter, not possible "to take it in"

  • larsen3d Feb 24, 2009

I believe it's an E series- that means it takes a 36" roll, right? Are those numbers you gave me the communication board? Is replacing this something that should be left for a professional? I replaced my belt but is this difficult or potentially dangerous to the plotter? I'm trying to save money but this is becoming a headache. Thanks for your input.

  • larsen3d Feb 24, 2009

WHen I went on the hp site and did automatic detection of products it said "no hp products found". I tried both of my ports.

Change the cable and test it... If it couldn't help you I suggest you to plug your printer to other computer to see if the source of problem comes from computer or printer. By this way you could find the source of problem and then do the best! At the end I suggest strongly to call with the support part of HP.
Good luck

Take the printer to any near by local repair cener of printer with your driver cd of printer instyallation.and ask the repair person to connect the printer at his service center in front of you.if the printer gets connected get your pc connections checked further but if the printer also does not get connected there then get your printer repaired there itself.
thanks.

As it clearly indicates that the problem is due to the socket loose internally where the wires are connected.the socket is actually soldered internally if that socket is loose nothing will happen.let you chasnge all the wires ,drivers, softwares.that socket has to be repaired.to repair that socket you should be familioar with soldering jobs.as it can be in any end of the wire the socket is faulty.the printer socket can also be faulty but as you said printer is new its rare chance of printer socket but can be possible.or the pc socket can be faulty where the wires get connected.

How did you originally install this printer's software?

With a cd from HP?

Do you have any other computers around that you could use temporarily to see if the problem occurs with them too?

Please don't rate my solution until we've finished up.

Thanks!

Find somebody with an older laptop. You're using a parallel cable to hook it up, right? If not any laptop with usb will be fine.

It sounds like the communication between the plotter and the computer is non existent. These can be a few things one the communication board on your plotter my be bad. Next it could be a bad cable if your using parallel or usb. Last if your on a network it could be an I.P address setting.

You need to uinstall the printer drivers again. Disconnect the printer from your computer and reinstall the printer drivers. Only plug in the printer when the software tell you too. For some reason HP has issues if you do not follow the directions of the software. Make sure you get latest driver from the HP website for your operating system. Please post response so I can keep hacking at it fo you.

I bought a used HP Design Jet 450 C...But its showing the cartridge and data solid orange light and ready light is constantly green. I brought a new black cartridge, the printer takes in the paper and...

I think the problem is not the computer. You shoud check the plotter by running the test print without the computer. When plotter's power is on, press Setup and Cancel keys simultaneously. If it does not print, then the plotter need repair.
According to your descriptions, there is System Error Code shown on your control panel. when the lights on for Ready+Cartridges+Data (DKL), it may have 9 possible causes referred by Service Manual page 2-7. You can check all these 9 items to see which one causes the problem.

HP DesignJet 450c printer issues.

You can purchase a External JetDirect card from any reputable HP (or computer) agent. This will allow you to plug the 450 directly into the network. The problem with the large format printers not being supported is strange to me. I have never had a problem, simply load the drivers and away you go. If the 450 drivers dont work for you, you can select any of the older drivers (750c recomended) and they will work on the 450c
