I cant get my ps3 to play threw my sony surrond system period the tv is a sony too i have all the hdmi cables hooked up why wont ps3 play on the surround?

    First I select the digital output and then select the audio output formats that my receiver supports (Doly Digital 5.1 in this case). then you you go back to the previous menu and it says to turn the unit on. Well it is on, the cable is connected but it will not leave this menu. The optical connector symbol on the screen remains dark. it will not leave this menu without cancelling your changes!! What is the problem here?

You can't get audio from HDMI cables. You have to connect the regular AV cables into your sound system first or you can use the digital output from the PS3 into your sound system if you've got the right cables. You'll also have to configure this through the audio settings. This should solve your problem. Let me know if it doesn't.

You will most likely have to contact your LG dealer to fix this. The problem is due to the HDMI input not recognising the playstation, the cure for this is a software upgrade for External Device IDentification (EDID), which can only be done by a service centre.

Check the couplings at either end of the cable. Sometimes these will loosen and can cause a lack of signal strength.

but its probably not the cable, its probably the ps3. HDMI cables don't really break because they are just wires, they don't have moving parts. Try connecting your PS3 to your TV with the regular cable red, white, and yellow connectors that you got when you bough the PS3. Ps3 HDMI cable no audio
You might want to try another HDMI cable...the one you have may have a short in it. You can find HDMI cables for really cheap online so it's not a big deal to buy on eor two more as back up. Also, try changing the audio settings with in the BluRay or DVD itself. Sometimes the movies can default to an unsuppotred audio format.

AUDIO
This TV ONLY transfer audio OUT to a ANALOG SYSTEM THRU AND ANALOG SIGNAL. That is, TV will play sound fine in your surround system but any digital (HDMI) wont sound.

Hooking up a sony playstation 3 with digital optical cable
Here's one solution, if you have an audio output from your tv, you can go from the audio output on your tv to the audio input on your receiver that way anything that is playing on your tv for example, playstation 3, dvd player etc. Anything playing on your tv will have audio on your onkyo home theater system. The other thing I would try if you want to hook ps3 directly to receiver is go to your connection settings on your ps3 menu and change your connection method to digital optical cable.

Connect PS3 for playing/viewing blue-ray thru surround sound
Connect the PS3 to your TV with the hdmi cable and to the surround sound system with a digital optical cable, then set your PS3 to output sound through the optical port (through the sound options menu) and you're good to go!
