Try this, hold the code key, press and release "L" key type 001, release "L" key. If this works the keyboard is going bad & will need replacing.

When typing, random letters are being printed, the keys of which have not been hit, at least not in the order in which they are printing on the paper.

You didn't give model so its hard to be sure...however check if your machine has a slide switch on the LHS of the Kybd...it may be in the PS position...should be in 10,12..etc.

When typing regularly each letter gives a differ letter thats on the keypad.

First check to see if the LANG is lit on the display, if so Code "L: will turn it off. If that is OK then Press coce and "L: key, release the code, type 001, release the "L" key. This will set the keyboard to USA standard. If this works your keyboard is failing. Contact
George Beyers Co. @1-800-392-8085 for a keyboard rebuild.

Check the ywo keyboard connectors to be sure they are plugged in fully, if they are then press & hold the code key, press & rel the "L" key type 001 then release the code key.

This will put you into the english keyboard mode. To cure the problem you need a keyboard.

Stuck in a Mode

These guys are repairers so they may have extra copies.
IBM's Typewriter's site also has manual for sale for less than $20.

The typewriter seems to have a bad ribbon cartridge or a bad typing wheel. Take each one out and try to see if it will type normal. If one does, then you know to replace it.

Problem with striking

Sounds like a keyboard problem. Check the connectors to be sure they are fully pluged in, if this isn't the problem try putting a piece of foil over the rt hand keybourd connector contacts that are bussed together (seven I believe) replug the ketboard and test. BE SURE TO BUSS ONLY THE CONNECTORS THAT ARE BUSSED ON THE CONNECTOR!!
