Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

1 Answer

Not RROD, or any of the Red bars.

I think it possibly may be the dvd driver. Does anyone know an easy way to clean the xbox 360 without having to completely take it apart? I played the 360 one night and went to bed. When I woke up and turned it on, no discs would at all. I would close the tray with any game(that have no scratches on it or anything) and it will only show open tray. Any solutions to this problem? I have only had my XBox 360 for a little over a year and I spent around $500 for the Elite. I'm pretty pissed about the situation so if anyone could spare some advice, I'd really appreciate it.

The best idea would be to get a cleaner DVD from a local electronics store. Anyone from radioshack to staples should have it for about $5, not expensive. Give it a run since they are suppose to work quite well.

Added bonus: this disc can be used in other devices too to keep them clean.

Whenever i turn on my xbox, around the power button turns all red and the xbox dashboard does not show up, what is happening?

If you have 4 red lights that would indicate the video cable is not connected correctly. Disconnecte the video cable and reconnect it.
The 3 red lights issue is known as the red ring of death(or RROD)
This is caused by the x clamps used to hold down the processor.
The x clamps cause to much pressure which causes the xbox 360 to think it is over heating. Microsoft has issued a extended warranty for the RROD issue. You can reach Microsoft by calling 1800 my xbox. The link below is to a Youtube video walk through on how to resolve the issue.

How do I fix the red ring?

ix your Xbox 360's RRoD by yourself, without towels or soldering irons! If you no longer have a warranty on your Xbox 360, and it has gotten the dreaded Red Ring, there is hope. As most of you know, the RRoD is a sign displayed by the 360's "Ring of Light" when there is a general hardware failure. While this can be caused by any part(or lack thereof) on the 360, the general cause is from excessive heat, which stresses the solder joints on the CPU and GPU. Over time, these joints can become seperated, which causes the Red Ring to visit your console, usually when you have a new game to play and you've taken the day off... What this fix involves is nothing but mere screws and washers. Seriously, no overheating your console, adding new fans(although you can add them if you like), or towels.

3 red lights flas when power is turned on

You have what is known as the xbox Red Ring Of Death aka... RROD.

If you are the original purchaser - Microsoft is fixing them for free (but you will be without your XBox for about 6 weeks.)

Basically - the RROD is from not enough thermal compound between the heatsink and processor. It overheats and goes into 3 light error mode.

There are sites that will fix (for a fee) and even videos on YouTube that describe how to fix it yourself if you are inclined to do that.

It entails opening up (and voiding your warranty) the 360. There are so many hidden screws and latches - it is imperative to find a video or step-by step instruction on opening it properly.

I would suggest sending in to Microsoft so your warranty is not compromised.

Otherwise - see THIS SITE for step by step instructions on opening, cleaning, and replacing the thermal compound.

Other places can be found simply by googling "RROD FIX" or try YouTube and look at some "RROD FIX" videos.

Its possible you could of overheated the solder under the GPU chip and you may need to have the chip replaced and reflowed. We have had success in reflowing the chip. We are listed on this site for repairs. If interested email us for free estimate.

Make sure you have all the clamps on the chips tight. If one pops loose it will cause this.
