How do I remove the hard drive?

Depending upon your model laptop, the hard drive may be located behind a panel on the bottom of the laptop or it may be located on the side of the laptop and the retaining screw/s will be on the bottom of the laptop.
When you remove the panel the hard drive will be screwed to a hard drive caddy. Remove the screws on the caddy to release the hard drive. Keep these screws as you will need them to fix the hard drive to the caddy.

I reformatted by emachines m5312 but windows xp can not proceed to windows setup-setup is starting windows and it turns off the laptop

Windows is very fussy about the hard drive being formatted

I would try a different Operating System just to be sure the rest of it is OK

The fix for you is to verify that XP can be installed with your disk.

Try a different hard drive

This is an extremely difficult problem. You may want to take it to a shop and have them install XP for you.

Since reinstalling my emachine laptop it wont pick up any wireless network

The driver for the wireless is either missing or not working. Go to emachines/Gateway website and download the driver for your model/serial no.

How do I clear the BIOS drive lock on eMachine notebook M5312

you can't. you need to replace the hard drive, that's the solution. there's no easy way around this feature.. it's specifically desiged so if the computer is stolen the drive becomes inaccesible.

Specifically where is the hard drive for the toughbook cf- 27 - i've looked all over

Flip the laptop over and slide the 2 tabs that are near the carry handle to the unlocked position. This will allow the metal cover on the underside of the laptop to hinge up and be removed.

With the laptop upside down and the carry handle facing you, you should see the battery on the left of the laptop. On the right, there is a silver case about 4 inches long and 2.5 inches wide. This is the hard drive caddy.

To remove /this/ part, carefully push the connecting cable towards the battery until it smoothly disconnects from the hard drive caddy. Remove the caddy from the laptop. Using a small phillips screwdriver, remove the 3 small screws which hold the top of the caddy on. Remove the top, and you will see the hard drive.

As a note - be sure you do not remove the gel lining. This is 99.9% of the hard drive's shock protection. When you remove the hard drive, the cable should come out of the caddy as well. Put the new cable on a new hard drive (HDD must be smaller than 65,536MB), put the new hard drive into the caddy with cable attached, make sure the cable assembly is fitted into the caddy slot, replace the caddy cover, replace the screws, replace the caddy into the laptop. Then, make sure you connect the cable from the laptop PC board to the caddy cable assembly. Replace cover, turn on computer, and set up your Operating System (if needed).

I have an E1505 with no hard drive, no dvd drive. 2 questions: Is there a special "sled" or tray needed for a new drive, and do the connectors for any new hard drive line up and plug into the bay...

Answer for question 2 is yes, get into the BIOS and change the boot menu to include a ISB device if one is not enabled. I am unsure of the factory default, but once you are in the BIOS you can check that usb booting is enabled.

The hard drive of the E1505 use a "caddy" which consists of a smooth plate and a caddy head that screws to the hard drive and allows easy access to the drive by allowing you to pull it free of the side of the computer. Some people do not use the flat plate and just screw the caddy head atraight to the drive itself. I would recommend the whole caddy setup. Ebay sells them by the hundreds. Dell does not use an adapter on the hard drive to get it to connect with the motherboard. Your drive should be a SATA interface and that is what is on the motherboard as a connection. All you need is a "caddy" to be able to easily remove and secure the hard drive.

My laptop, emachine m5312 shuts down by itself despite the power settings to stay on, any ideas?

it may be set to hibernate in the bios. if it's randomly shutting down while you are working then you probably have an overheat issue.

Hard Disk upgrade

Figured this out...
1)  Flip laptop over, keep front of laptop closest to you and hinges away from you 2)  Remove cover with cylinder/harddrive icon (2 screws) 3)  Remove small single silver screw near the front (close to you) of the laptop in the center of the metal harddrive caddy (the caddy may hold one or two hard drives) 4)  Pull the plastic tab on the left toward the outside of the laptop... the whole caddy with harddrive(s) inside will shift to the left, disconnecting it from the motherboard and lining up the caddy for removal. 5)  Lift the entire bracket straight up
To remove the primary harddrive (the only one present in my model) you must remove the blue L-shaped circuit board from the caddy. 1)  Flip the caddy over 2)  Remove the three screws with slightly larger head diameters around the perimiter of the caddy 3)  Push/slide/jiggle the circuit board so the sata connectors release from the hard drive(s). 4)  Unscrew the hard drive from the caddy
