My picture is split. For example when text is on the screen the words are in red above and then again in blue slightly below. Is this an easy/cheap fix or should I get rid of the T.V.?

Based on your description, the convergence circuit has failed. If you looked at the tv menu do you see what may look to be 3D, double image, or a red picture and then blue picture slightly offset? The picture may be distorted as well.

A repair shop will charge about $300 to fix.

If you have soldering skills, an electronics background, an OHM meter, then its not to hard to do, just time consuming.

My picture appears to be out of convergence but i cannot adjust it back. Looks like the green is off a couple of inches.

TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

Pioneer SD-582HD5 - screen went black, no sound, Poor remote feed

The blue tube might be leaking coolant in the high voltage area, that is the cause of the POP. This repair might not be a DIY because of the lethal high voltage surrounding the CRTs tubes.
The slow response from the remote could be because the coolant has affected the main board where the IR signal are going to the remote sensor.
Let me know if you require further assistance.

Component video issue

You have a component not up to specs in your input 2 circuitry possibly a capacior. You would need a service manual to locate which item that isnt up to its rating. you can purchase the service manual for your set for 12.99 at the following link. They will emal it if you send them an email requesting it.
