Hoshizaki Flaker Gear Motor Part

I need a part for the gear motor (auger drive transmission) for a Hoshizaki F650-MAE Ice Machine (Flaker). The company wants to sell me a new motor and transmission for $1700 but all I need is a small gear wheel made out of nylon composite (designed to wear out) that is easily replaceable. Help!

I am looking for the first gear of a speed-reducing gear motor from a Hoshizaki Flaker Ice Machine model F-650MAE. This same gear motor would probably be used in several different flaking models and the ice auger mechanism is basically the same in several models. The gear is nylon or fiber and is 2 & 1/8" in diameter, 1/2" thick, and has a hole in the center with a key way. The 62 teeth are angled. The company will only sell me a complete gear motor assembly, motor and all but due to the age of the machine, the cost simply is not justified. Someone, somewhere, must stock this gear, know where I can get one, or point me to someone that has a pile of used machines. Any help would be seriously appeciated. Thank you.

  • kettnerequip Feb 20, 2009

Um, I'd like to thank everyone who has directed me to parts warehouses and Hoshizaki itself but this, unfortunately is not helping. I know I can purchase a new gear motor and have had many of you point me in that direction. The thing is this; the gear motor drive was made to come apart and the fibre wheel was made to fail or break so that the rest of the mechanism did not. Therefore, it should be available somewhere.
One expert told me the gear motor is not serviceable; um, I'm not into HVAC or appliances and I had the gear motor out, apart and properly diagnosed in 1/2 and hour.
So, thank you everyone that has tried so far, but what I really need is a gear supplier or a source of used parts. Hoshizaki and other new parts dealers and websites just want to sell me a $1700 part...which is way to much for a $1000 machine!
As for the machine shop - I'm still trying that too but the only shops willing to take the project on are telling me it will be 4 - 5 hours in setup alone.

  • kettnerequip Feb 20, 2009

Please! A link to a website that will sell me the complete assembly for $1700 is NOT a solution! A source for used parts or the actual gear would be. Thanks boys.

I expereinced the same problem and the only solution I could come up with was to have the gear fabricated. I made a few fro backup. I haven't used any in the two years since i fixed mine. I can sell you a replacement gear or you can send me the gear box and I will install the new gear for you. This same gear box is used in a number of Hoshizaki flakers. Typically symptoms are noisy gear box and jerky auger, or motor spinning but no Auger rotation. Cause is typically scaling/ calcium build up in the evaporator tube. The extra torque stips the gear.

I ran into exactly the same problem. Faced with a $1700 repair bill, my solution was to have a new gear made. I had several made, my Hoshizaki flaker is still running strong 2 years later with the new gear. I can either sell you a gear or repair your gear box.

The same gear box is used on a number of flakers. Symptoms are a noisy, popping gear box, irregular or no auger rotation when the gear motor is spinning. The problem is caused by calcium / scale build up in the evaporater cylinder, which requires more torque to overcome the extra resistance and the nylon gear in transmission gives up first. Repacing the the gear box is simple, replacing the gear inside the box is bit more work but do-able with just an allen wrench and average handy man skills. It is filled with oil so it does make a bit of a mess. Call me if I can help James 580 799 2873

HELLO AND GOOD DAY!
Don't give up! I had the same problem witht a Scotsman I had, and was told I had to replace the whole transmission, but I kept looking and found that the parts could be ordered, and finally found an outfit that would order the gear I needed. I was able to put the gear drive back together as good as new.

I agree with Benimur. They make that unit so it is not serviceable on purpose. Part of their philosophy of "no parts to wear out". You are going to have to get if fabricated and either pay that price, or buy an entire new assembly. Bottom Line.

Use THIS contact form to inquire about a replacement gear.

Any gear fabricating company will be able to help out with the gear as long as it is in tact and proper measurements can be taken.

I have used THIS company before to machine a metal drive gear for a replacement to the plastic one on my R/C vehicle. But it requires you to take the proper measurements!! They have a great "CAD" program that you can design the gear yourself.

The Gear I purchased from them was $89 (plastic replacement was $25) and about 1.5" dia.

Thanks for using FixYa - a FixYa rating is appreciated!!

As that only part ,the gear which you require is not available but you will have to get whole motor unit but that is too costly.trhe option to try out is local repair center as they have all the parts in spare and also provide you if you explain the exact part or at the junk shop you can get but the same unit is very much difficult to get there as when you require.but the local repair shop near your area will provide you that.

I have been to the Hoshizaki training classes in the past. Yeah, they try to sell you everything.

Sorry for your luck but they will not offer tranny part as peices. You have to buy the whole unit.

From now on out; SAVE all the parts your strip from a Hoshi and store them "just in case". You never know what parts you are going to need.

You have a couple of options, you either find local Hoshi dealers in your area and see if they have scraped any parts that you need. Most of the time they will give them to you for free; just for asking.

-or-

You can have the part manufactured. At the tune of $1,700.... you can get someone to make the part much cheaper.

Even if you use a premo company like Rush Gears Inc. They don't charge $1700.

You may also try these suppliers.
Rushgears.com out of Fort Washington, PA
K2plasticsinc.com from Bergen, NY
abapgt.com from Manchester, CT

Hope this helps and good luck with your repair.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

May I offer an alternative? If you still have the broken nylon gear, then a replica can be machined. It could be made out of nylon composite, teflon or even brass. You need to locate a "Machine Shop" with a Milling machine (with indexer) and a lathe. The machine shop could take the measurements of the broken gear and replicate on a block of raw material. It may be expensive but to my thinking nowhere near the $1700. Additionally, you could ask the shop to make several as spares or share with others with the same problem.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Hi,

when the gear motor is damage it cannot be repair only solution is to replace..
but if you unit is new and still on warranty period try to send or call the technician of the store where you the unit.....
but if it is not? try to look to a surflash shop who are selling a second handed spare parts but be sure that it is in good condition and still working.

hope my suggestion will help you to decide.

thanks,

The small gear is not something that you can just order through any company. You will need to replace the motor and the transmission which can be ordered here.
There is also a number on there that you can call and talk to hoshizaki themselves

I work on Hoshizaki everyday in and out. This is my specialty I am sorry to tell you this but there is not a way to just replace the gear unless you have one specially made or order what I posted to you for 465 dollars and install the whole system. I know it comes apart. The problem is though is that Hoshizaki did not make parts to fit this and there is not a company besides a skilled shop to make the actuall gear.

  • Jeremy Reddick
    Jeremy Reddick Feb 20, 2009

I would also like to know where they got the 1700 dollars to replace this part. Also I know that Hoshizaki is not selling the part for 1700 dollars. I believe that the company working on your unit is just trying to get money out of you. I replace the motor and the trans for 750. I know that is still alot but at the same time the unit is worth it when it comes down to it. I use a local shop to have my gears made out of a teflon composite for longer lasting.

Hoshizaki Model KM 630 MAE

Look for a stuck float switch. unit fills with water for 1 minute, then the board "looks" at the float to "see" if there is enough water in the unit to run. If float switch is stuck down, it tells the unit there is not enough water and the unit stays in the fill cycle causing the sump to overflow and send water down the drain constantly. Compressor will not run till the board senses that there is enough water to run.

We have a hoshizaki ice machine 901mwh the ice cubs seems to be getting stuck in the evaporator area and pileing up on it self and freezing bake up

The main problem with Hoshizaki machines is if you are in a hard water area, if so do you have a good quality water filter, it may need changing. A quick way to check for calcium ot lime deposits in the machine is
1. Turn it off, run you clean hand around the area near the evaporator, are there any rough or flaky deposits there, if so you may need a chemical descale, contact a reputable fridge guy to do this for you.
2. The swinging arm motor may be faulty or possibly the ice sensor which controls the harvest cycle. If this is faulty sometimes the tray goes back up before the ice has slid off.
3. If the machine is situated in a cellar or other cool (less than 10 deg C / 50 deg f) this can sometimes affect the harvest cycle again to set this you need a tradesman.
4. Does the water flow properly over the lower part of the mould plate during a harvest cycle, the pipe can become blocked or dislodged.

Hope this is helpful

GE S/S Refrigerator model GSS20IEBWW auger not turning

Take a hair dryer and heat the auger drive gear. These will sometimes get moisture on them and freeze up.
Turn the refrigerator off first. Then remove the ice bin. The "U" shaped drive will be in the back.
After you have heated it thoroughly, try to move the gear manually. Resume power and try it again.

Hoshizaki ice machine KM500-MAE not sending water to harvest

I would not change the pump. If it runs for 3-5 minutes and stops, it has to be a control. The control board runs the freeze cycle for the first 5 minutes. This prevent "Short Cycling" of the freeze cycle. The board looks at the float after the first 5 minutes for the proper water level but should not effect the pump. If the pump does not run in the wash mode, check out the "Power/ Wash" switch. I would start there before I go spending hundreds on pump motor or control board. You may be able to get by on a $20 fix! Do this and get back to me. We will get it going.

Good Luck

Most likely(50% of the times) Your Ice machine need a real cleaning. not just run clean cycle with ice machine cleaner. every 6 month call HVAC-R guys - machine will last half time longer if u schedule proper maintenance with them. I have seen It all: people try to call "friend", or someone who "knows" how this machines work. Real clean would take up to 3 hours for people who know what they doing. Here is one of my videos, when 3 beeps - long freeze cycle is not common and all others would offer You to get a new Ice Machine. Bill to the owner was 950$, New Machine 3450$ plus labour to install 600$.
