You dont say if the car is a standard or automatic but betting it is a standard or manual shift I would say the clutch is either out of adjustment or worn out causing it to slip at startup or this will happen going up a hill in high gear also, the only solution is get it adjusted or if its worn out replace it, and take care when replacing it you replace the pilot bearing, clutch, Pressure plat, and throw out bearing. Also check the flywheel for cracking or scorching, or roughness and get it resurfaced if any of these conditions sre found. Hope This Helps Don

Yes you most likely have a bad throw out bearing. If you replace the bearing you would do yourself a favor and replace the clutch and pressure plate while you are there.

Miata steering feel

Some cars have progressive power steering, light at slow speeds for parking etc. But at speed a heavier feel so you can feel what the grip is like on the front tyres when driven hard. But check the power steering fluid level as well, the pump could be leaking.

Car takes off slow

might be clogged catalytic converter it can cause loss of power due to carbon built up that's why it seems like it takes a bit to pick up speed

Lack of power when climbing hills and slow to pick up speed

It sounds like your vehicle needs a major tune-up. Try putting in some fuel injector cleaner gas additive and a new air intake filter.

Power steering problem when moving slow or rpm drop

no it is the power steering pump. the pump is worn so at low rpm or low speeds it is real tough to steer. but when the rpm is picked up the steering gets easier.

Also check belt tension but at high rpm speeds the belt would slip and squel real loud. so i would point the problem to the power steering pump.

hope this fixs ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
