Yea it worked fine before, apart from the freezing thats why i had to take it apart to put the thermal compound on the CPU and GPU.

I did notice the disc does spin, and the laser does come on, but nothing else :S

  • Alex Keen Feb 22, 2009

I have solved it now, i just took the drive apart, moved the laser along the slider then kept my finger on the eject button and it reset the drive :)

The BD drive on my PS3 is not spinning the disc anymore, and as the warranty has expired, I can't fix it for free anymore. The Sony officials said that I have to pay 157 $ in order to get the problem fixed and hand over the old console (mine) and receive a "new" one (refurbished not new, most likely). As I don't want to spend my money for games, what can i do to fix the problem?

Check your cables. Try swapping lasers with a friend. Those are the first things I would try.

If your ps3 stops spinning discs its because its fallen or has been hit.

- 2 iron pins inside the bluray disc hold plastic mechanism
- if either of these pins are misplaced, ur bluray drive will NOT spin.

i just spent 5 hours figuring out how to solve this.

solution: open the bluray disc drive entirely, u need the bottom metal layer to be off the disc, then u will see the wide V-shaped metal arm that has 2 pins on it, facing upwards in the drive. One of these 2 pins needs to be placed back into the original position (this is a plastic whole in the exact shape of the metal pin).

PS: IF U TRY THIS YOURSELF BE CAREFULL

On my ps3 80gb system, the disc never spins up. I don't have a problem replacing the part myself, but I don't know what part to order. can you help. Thanks! Mike

Hi there, the PS3 blu ray is a bit of a complex device. Basically the way it work is before the disc is even spun the laser reads and detects what kind of media is inserted into the PS3. As you are saying the disc is not spinning there are 2 possible causes for this.
1. The blu ray lens has gone and is unable to read blu ray discs, hence the disc does not spin as none is detected.
2. The actual motor that spins the disc has gone. This is a much more unlikely reason, the blu ray lens is a common problem on the PS3.

As a shot in the dark you could try a laser lens cleaner but make sure it is suitable for blu ray. If this does not work you are going to have to purchase a new blu ray drive. You can get them for around £70 on ebay but you need to make sure you get the right one. Check your PS3 model number and google it to find which drive you have.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

The system is not reading any games

Hello there,
The reason your system is not reading any game is because the lens is not working, to fix this, follow the steps below;
  1. Unplug the power cable, video cable and controllers and remove any discs from the disc drive
  2. Remove the rubber foot on the left side of the PS3, unscrew the security screw and slide off the top lid.
  3. Unscrew all nine screws under the lid and lift off this section to reveal the inside. Be sure to unplug the cable that connects to this lid before completely removing it.
  4. Remove the gray box. This is the Blu-ray drive. Disconnect the power supply and the cable connecting it to the motherboard
  5. Remove the five screws on the outside of the Blu-ray drive to remove the metal shell.
  6. Remove the next set of screws on the black plastic cover to gain access to the inside of the Blu-ray drive. Disconnect the red and black cable to pull the two plastic halves apart.
  7. Remove the cables and brackets and screws holding the laser in place and slide off the laser module. Be sure to check the model number on the laser to make sure you purchase the right replacement model.
  8. Replace with new laser module, reverse your steps and reassemble the PS3.

Take care

    PS3 80GB not spinning DISC

the PS3 sony Blu-ray drive is very sensible..you should check the drive sensors first...
Could be a defective motor that´s not spining the disc...
would be very nice to test another blu-ray laser unit...connected with your blu-ray controller board...and you wil find if the logical blu-ray board is ok..or dead..So you must have a hardware to test and prove a second opinion !!!
    Good Luck !!!

    PS3 Won't Take Disc!

Hi, I think it was me who had helped you before. I will be glad to help again. Ok, first you have to tear apart your PS3 (just like when you cleaned it). Now looking at the rollers and "dogs" make sure that they are closed and not open all the way like when a disc is in it. Look at the flap on the top too make sure it opens and closes freely. Next, PLEASE BE CAREFUL!! Plug your PS3 in and try to hit the eject button, if it is reset and ready for a disc it will beep twice when you hit the eject button without a disc in it. Place the top back on the he DVD drive and try to insert a disc. At this point it should take it. If not then try hitting the eject again. Once the PS3 resets and takes and ejects discs again, then you can put it back together.

Playstation 3 - discs not reading

If the warranty is still intact, Sony can fix it. If not, open the ps3, open the blu-ray drive and clean the laser. If that doesnt work, replace the laser.

    Ps3 not spinning disk

    Hello.

When you put in a disc, listen for the disc to start spinning. If you do not hear that then the laser and/or the spindle have blown out. You will have to get your Blu-Ray player serviced by a pro or Sony. Sony may fix it for free. They know that the drives are failing. So call them first. Otherwise the laser assembly needs to be replaced in the BR drive.
I hope this helps! Good luck to you.
