If I understand, when you sign in, you get stuck with the blue screen. Usually, that means tha the explorer has failed to load. To verify,

    hit ctrl+shift+escape

find the new task button and execute a command (iexplore per example). If it works, then try to launch explorer.exe

To fix your computer, execute sdfix (all is explained, take time to read instructions)

    http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/Remov...

Another way is to execute sfc /scannow (be sure to have your XP CDrom with the right Service Pack inside).

If you have not the right SP or no SP integrated, you can update your CDROM with www.nliteos.com

    There are other solutions :

repair (boot from the OS CDROM)

use snapshot : F8 at boot and choose a recovery date (if system recovery was enabled)

My daughters HP pavilion boots with an exception breakpoint. I tried to boot in safe mode and got a Run-time error, 10050 Network subsystem failed, I don't know what she's done to it, any ideas?

You probaly just have a broken program in your startup programs and with the "exception breakpoint" error I would guess it's java based.
Try this:
To get to startup programs go
Start -> Run -> In the box type "msconfig" and press enter -> Press the startup tab -> and look for any software that may be causing the problem and disable.

Hope this helps.

The Execution Breakpoint has been reached 0x80000003

With that little bit of info, you may want to check out a couple of things...

(a) See if there isn't some file-sharing software on there (Limewire comes to mind) and get rid of it.
(b) Try booting to safe mode and running an online virus scan from http://www.bitdefender.com or http://www.trendmicro.com. He may have gotten dinged with something bad that is crashing at shut down. I hope this helps.
