Question about Projection Televisions

10 Answers

I have the Sony KD34XBR2, a great TV... Purchased in 2002 and never had any problems UNTIL I was fooling around with the original remote (haven't used in years) and looked at the ilink button. I inadverently hit it and then by mistake hit the power button. Now it won't come on. Just the blinking light, 7 blinks. I hit the up button with hitting the power button, unplugged, let set, etc..... talked to customer support and have an appt for Friday... I am not a patient person... Can you help?

Once again,,,,,the same problem. I am unsure about voltage? circuits? I am a lay person and trying to avoid the high cost of inhome repair. Isn't there something I can do? Is there a reset button on the back or something? I would look, but it's VERY HEAVY and I am not even 5 feet tall!! It's in my entertainment center... Please, something else I can do?

  • shortymeekba Feb 18, 2009

Not that I am disputing the first two solutions, but would someone else clafify this? A third person to explain it a little better for me? Thanks.....

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

The iLink button and power button simultaneous pressed did not cause the problem, it was just coincidental. The blinking lights indicate that auto-protect mode has been engaged and the 7 blinks refer to an error in the horizontal/high-voltage section.

Unfortunately this type of problem is not an easy user repair. This of course would require opening the Sony TV, familiarity with electronic components & circuitry, use of a DVM/VOM and a soldering iron.It would be to your added advantage access to a Service Manual or at the very least a schematic diagram. Repairs would involve working in the high voltage section, continuity checks and voltage measurements. Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps your best bet would be to seek the services of a qualified professional. Factoring in the length of years in service of the Sony, the expected cost of repair, downtime and efforts required to effect a repair, you may want to re-evaluate your options and consider replacing the the TV. Sorry but have to state all the options.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
It will need a service technician.

According to service manual of KD-34XBR2, seven blinks code means Horizontal deflection is stopped and qualified TV tech will fix it as novice should not try to repair this kind of problem.

The TV is on protection mode because a wrong voltage from main had been detected.

Unplug the TV overnight, so that you drain ower completely, this should fix the problem.

If that does not fix the problem, then the TV has a bad power board that must be replaced.

The 7 blinks indicates a high voltage shutdown. The 33,000V line limit as exceded. Usually this is a problem with the regulator circuit. It is coincidense that the problem occurred at that time. The regulator part is about $25 or so.

To clear this please turn off the TV for 10 minutes and then switch it on and then do the following

Clearing is done by going into the service mode (press display then channel then Channel 5 button then  volume plus and then power  button). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition

You can try and reset the TV, if its not the hardware issue  it will reset it else its a Harware issue and you need to power supply circuitry. And, that would need a qualified technician.

So, before goin to tech. try and reset it.

    Thanks

How-to check a Lamp Ballast board on a Sony KDF-55e2000 TV for proper operation

You cant test them unfortunately. The only reliable way is to swap it out with a known good ballast. They can and do go bad sitting as the capacitors start to dry out from not using them. Sitting is bad for electronics. Buy a ballast from ebay(used known good) and try it. Thats your best bet honestly.

KDF46E2000 - Change Lamp Warning - Reset

Bulb is most likely OK. Original bulb in Sony TV is Philips, label on bulb usually says Philips. Sony don't make bulbs. Sony Cost is usually 1.5 times other sources. Many shopping cart operations sell condemned, reject or poor quality electronic service items because cost of return and fooling with them is excessive. This is obvious and widespread with convergence ICs and other parts.

Lamp timer needs reset. This is usually an automatic function. TV detects Increased lamp current from previous failed bulb or weak bulb condition and resets automatically. TV must be unplugged for lamp replacement for this to work. Occasionally it must be reset manually, as below:

1. TV must be in standby mode. (Power off).
2. Press the following buttons on the Remote Commander within a
second of each other:
DISPLAY Channel 5 Volume + POWER .1. Access Service Adjustment Mode and select the Service Menu that
contains the Category with the Adjustment Item you want to change.
2. To change the Category, press 2 or 5 on the Remote Commander.
Note: Pressing 2 or 5 only changes the categories within the
Service Menu displayed. To change a Category on one of the other
Service Menus, press the JUMP button until the correct Service
Menu is displayed.
3. To change the Adjustment Item, press 1 or 4 on the Remote
Commander.
4. To change the Data Value, press 3 or 6 on the Remote
Commander.
Note: To go back to the last saved Data Value, press 0 then ENT
on the Remote Commander to read the memory.
5. To save the changes, press MUTING then ENT to write into
memory.
6. To exit service mode, turn the power off by pressing POWER .
Wait 2 minutes before restarting the set to allow the fans to
completely shut down or the Service Menu will appear on the screen.

I stumbled across a tutorial on fixing the convergence for my Sony KP-46WT510 a while ago, and now I can't find it again! Does anyone know where I can find that tutorial or one similar to it? We've been...

Here is a walk through on how to set your convergence.

A quick and easy way to try and let the TV realign the convergence try this...

1) Turn on the TV and tune to a channel and let it warm up for about a half an hour to let everything settle into its normal operating mode.

2) Press the Flash Focus button on the original TV remote. A cross pattern will show on the screen and the process is complete when the cross turns white and the TV returns to the program you were watching.

3) Do not press any other buttons until this process has completed.

If this does not adjust it enough you can adjust the convergence manually as follows:

1) Press the menu button on the original TV remote.

2) Use the arrow keys on the remote to highlight setup and press + button to select.

3) Use arrow keys to select convergence and press + button to select.

4) A pattern of white crosses appears, with a yellow [ ] around one of the
crosses. Aligned crosses (which do not need adjustment) look white and
have little or no red or blue showing. Crosses that are not aligned show
red or blue shades beyond their edges.

5) Use the arrow keys to move the [ ] to a cross that is not aligned. ***Note: start with crosses in the middle and work outward ****
*** TIP: Set the alignment while about 5 feet from TV for better results ****

6) Press the + button to select the cross and the [ ] will turn red indicating it is ready to adjust the Red convergence.

7) Use the arrow keys to move the red cross on top of the white one or at least as close as you can get it.

8) Once the Red is aligned press the + key again and the [ ] will turn blue. This indicates it is now ready to adjust the blue convergence.

9) Use the arrow keys to move the blue cross on top of the white one or at least as close as you can get it.

10) Once you have aligned the blue cross press the + button again and the [ ] should turn yellow.

11) Repeat steps 5 through 10 until all the crosses are aligned. To exit back to regular programming press the menu button on the remote.

PART number for the original remote is :290P10310

Almost any Mitsubishi remote made in the last 8 years will operate this set--even the ones for the DLP type sets--stay away from universal remotes as most of the time the will do only the basic functions---I have talked to customers of mine who found used ones at swap meets etc for very little money---I would bet you can still get the remote from Mitsubishi--if I remember most of these are around 40 dollars from them.

Another idea is have someone at a TV shop look at your old remote--if they know what they are doing they can test it( I have a laminated card with a strip on it--point the remote at the card and the strip should light up when you press any button)

If if cannot be fixed---Try either Mitsubishi or I have seen a lot of these remotes for sale on Ebay.

Let me know if this helps you-----I am here to help people.

Sony KP-61V90 61 in. Rear... Problem

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
701cb04.jpg
77ea520.jpg
f0900cb.jpg
Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

TV set after fluid change

65af323.jpg

2c07611.pngSolution #2

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.
