Just got laptop. Turn it on it boots up but the monitor does not turn on. Tried adjusting monitor brightness but that doesn't work. Plugged monitor into external monitor and works fine. I am a newbie with laptops and it may be something very stupid i'm not doing.

System setup Disks do not have any relation to your Monitor unless it is an All-In-One PC or a Laptop.
If you can see display when the unit is booting, but not when Windows should be displaying the Desktop, then your Display Size has been set outside of the size limits or refresh rate of the monitor.
An IT Technician could help you boot the PC in Safe Mode to remove the Monitor and let it re-install. This should forward the instructions to Windows to re-detect the monitor and the display limits it has.
If you have no display at any period, try another monitor.
sounds like your monitor cable has died. This will mean openng the machine up and is a fiddely job,. If you cant connect to an external dispaly with the connection on the laptop....then that is your problem
first try booting the laptop and pressing the Fn key with the numerical ( numbered key ) that has a picture of 2 screens on it. This is for booting to an external monitor. you could also try adding an external ( pc monitor ) this will eliminate any motherboard Faults.
Secondly, the graphics chip driver may be corrupt or not installed correctly. if you have a restore cd, you could try booting the laptop, with the cd in the drive.
you can then try, to see if the settings in the bios are all correct, by booting/starting the laptop and pressing esc or F2 or delete immediately as the laptop starts. ** Be-Careful** what you adjust.
My suggestion is to look for. ** default settings tab** or load setup defaults.
these are the obvious things to try, before assuming that you have a faulty graphics chip or motherboard fault.
Check VGA cord connection, possibly try another, shorter VGA cord, plugging in cords BEFORE booting up computer, with monitor power on also. No signal is just computer telling you that it is not connecting.
You may have to go into Setup when computer boots up and turn on or select external monitor as some laptops may require this. Good Luck!

OK try booting up in "Safe Mode" Press F8 just after Turn on, when and if ya boot into safe mode then adjust your Video settings to say 1024x768x32bit and then reboot, if all good then when you are at the desktop, then adjust the settings to whatever you require... maybe 1280x1024x32bit.. Ya all good.
If this doesn't work.. try the Monitor on another PC.. see if it works... if it does.. then maybe ya Video card is going/gone "Toes up" if not, then ya got a fault in your monitor, usually some sort of Power Supply problem or the like.
