I was wondering how to reboot it to factory settings (how i first bought it) everytime i try, it comes up with system restore and only restores when i last backed it up.

In order to restore your system back to totally factory settings you have to have the CD that came with your computer. Then you will have to make sure that you are booting from the DVD or CD-ROM as the first boot and the second is HD. Not sure as to what F button you need to actuate during the boot up to get to BIOS it may be F2 or F12 anyway when you get to the BIOS select boot and choose CD or DVD-ROM as the first boot then either F10 and exit or exit. Follow on screen instructions in the BIOS.

Now place your recovery CD or DVD in the drive and restart the laptop. Select restore complete system when the option from the CD restore disc comes up. It will format and restore your original system files. You do have to have the original restore disc for your model and serial for your lap top since you did not mention what brand your laptop is just go to the support or downloads or on their site for your computer to be able to purchase one. That is the only way you can restore it back to its original state when you purchased it. Thanks for using FixYa! John

I have a Gateway GT4016 Desktop PC im trying to restore it back to factory settings without the cd. can you help

almost all gateway have all of your restore to factory default on a drive that is hidden on the hard drive. All company's use a different key to do this but I always start with f5 start the comp and hold f5 down and the system restore program should pop up. If it is not f5 it will just beep at ya. Then just do the same thing over and over starting with f1 all the way to f12 until you find the right one. but I always try f5 and f8 first hope that helps

Factory restore

If you have no program choices in the Programs menu to do a factory restore, you will have to use the CD/DVD that came with the computer.
I don't know why you need to do a restore, but if the computer still is working and you don't have a recovery CD/DVD, the Programs area may give you an option to create a set of restore CD's or DVD's.

Otherwise, you will have to request a set from the computer dealer. There are other ways, but they are a bit tedious.

I insert restore disk and nothing happens

Hi there.
If you don't have the option of hitting F12 to change the boot order to the CD/DVD just as the computer starts up then you will have to enter the bios to change the boot order.
Restart the machine and hit either Del or Esc to enter the bios, look for the boot order and set the CD/DVD as first boot device, hit F10 and exit the bios, the computer will restart and you should now be able to boot from the CD/DVD.
Please post back with the results and if you need anymore help.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Laptop wil not start. Dell Inspiron 8600

Insert a Windows XP CD into your CD/DVD drive.
Restart your computer.
It should now be booting off your Windows XP disc.
If it doesn't boot off the CD. Follow the steps below:
Change boot order in BIOS
  • When your computer is starting up tap the Del key and until you enter the Bios, when in Bios click on Boot order and change it to :
    • CD/DVD
    • Hard Drive (HDD)
    • Floppy
  • Then save and exit Bios (Your computer should now be restarting)

While it is booting off the disk you should get a prompt to Press R to enter recovery Console, Press R.

Press 1 to log onto Windows then press Enter. You will need the administrative password to get into to command prompt. If the administrator password was blank press enter.

Type into the command prompt : chkdsk /r and press Enter. When the Disc Check is complete type in Exit and press enter. Remove the Windows XP CD.

Windows should start up normally now.

Check your monitor on another computer. If it is ok connect it to your bad computer. Open the CPU case and unplug all the data cables and power cables to HDD, floppy and cd/dvd. Remove keyboard and mouse. also remove pci cards if any. You didn't mention about video card. I guess it is onboard. Now put it on an see. If nothing happens blame the motherboard.

Gateway GT4016

I have had this happen to me! What you are going to want to do is: Go to My Computer Right click your dvd drive (mine is "D") Left click Properties Click the tab on the top that says Hardware *It should show you all of the disk drives on your computer* Locate your DVD drive depending on the manufacturer--click on it Now that it is highlited, click Properties Click the Properties tab at the top of the box Make sure that the volume level all the way to the right If there is a check box saying "Enable sound" or something similar to that, check it If there is a check box saying something like "enable sound for DVDs" check it This should work, if not, respond again to this message! -Mster714-
