There are different types of Mod chips for the Ps2, You may need to describe your mod chip.
It can take up to one hour from first screw til the last! You need to know how to solder as you must solder 4 - 23 wires depending on your Mod chip.
There are a few options that I know of, all of which include phsyically modding the console.
As far as I know, there's no softmod for any playstation product (other than the PSP). You'll have to either add a mod chip (which usually involves desoldering the original CPU and soldering the mod chip into place) or get a flip top (if it's a fat PS2). The flip top version is easier, as you're just replacing the top of the outer shell.
sounds like the laser is touching the cd, some times the disk on the motor will slide down causing this and ps2 had problems with the motor ic buring out. check this site out,. http://www.mod-chip.com/index-cart-us.php?go=en/select_ps2_main.htm
