Well how long have you had the unit because it may be under warranty. I called the customer service number at 18008001020 and the rep said he may be able to do something with your software to fix the problem. If you're outside of warranty it's $90 to process and they send you a replacement. I would call first and check my options. Hope this helped and if it did leave me feedback. FIXYA!

These units seem to be sufering from a bad conection on the inside of the unit. My wife's did the same thing. There was a connection inside that wasn't making contact. First try cleaning the 4 brass connection tabs on the watch and check your charger to make sure the tabs are raised and not squished. Second try to reset the unit. Hit mode reset and power buttons all at the same time. Hold these for 3 seconds and then release. If these do not work here is what I did. There are no screws holding the unit together. I used a exacto blade to very carefully pry the unit apart along the side seam. It's not easy to do. Be very cautious and gentle. Work the thickness of the blade into the joint to gently wedge apart. You are not trying to remove material! Once apart you will see some fingers that make a connection between the upper and lower part of the unit. This is where the problem was with my wife's 305. I gently raised these tabs to make a better connection, It's been working ever since. I didn't try it before but try pressing very hard on the unit where it says Forerunner 305. The case is very hard so it might not work. But if it powers up when pushing you found your problem. Hope this helps. Here is a link I found on opening a 205 (Same process)http://ctorunner.googlepages.com/dismantleforerunner205 To put the unit back together use Automotive silicon/gasket maker.Use a tooth pick to put a VERY small amount of silicon around the entire seam. Put the two half's together and wrap tightly with electrical tape. Test the unit immediately to see if it powers on and off. If it does not open it back up and raise the small prongs that make the connection from the bottom half to the top half. If any silicon squishes out the sides wipe with water and a rag.Let the unit sit over night. In the morning remove the tape.

Garmin Forerunner battery replacement

It's not always the battery, I assumed it was and opend mine up to check it out but the battery was OK.
Problem was the unit wouldn't start without pressing mode + reset followed by the power button.

I lifted the internal watch contact strips to put a better connection between the two halves but that made no difference.
I found that I couldn't delete all the history and the watch had recently turned itself off on a run after giving a low battery warning => the history was corrupted and caused the watch grief.

The only way I found to delete the history was to load a v 2.80 (or earlier) version of the watch s/w (current 2.90 doesn't delete history and there is no tool to do it!)
Fortunately I had a copy of v2.80 but the old version is not now on the Garmin site (that I saw).
Moral of the story, don't run your battery low for two reasons, Li-ion batteries lose capacity if you run them below ~30% and also if the watch "low battery" turns off while recording it can corrupt the history and really upset the watch.

At least I now know how to open the watch and have found plenty of possible small mobile phone batteries that will fit (Samsung have a few possibilities). The ABSOLUTE max size of a replacement battery is 36mm H x 43 mm wide x 5.8 mm deep.
If you go 43 mm wide you have to trim a couple of internal plastic ridges in the case.

Good luck and try starting after pressing mode + reset if it won't fire up then try and delete all the history.
Also DON'T run the battery low if you want it to last, Li-ion work opposite to NiCad and NiMH which should be fully discharged before recharge. You try and keep them above 50%.

I moved the battery wires to the main board, bypassing the spring contacts. No doubt my warranty is voided but at least the thing works now.
