Are you currently hooked up to the internet?

If so, you can download the driver automatically by right clicking on my computer -> properties -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager

When that loads, find the correct device (may have a yellow question mark next to it) -> right click on the device -> properties -> Driver tab -> Update driver.

The wizard should guide you through the rest and find the correct driver.

I formatted my laptop and the sound is no longer heard

If available, you need to load the drivers for your sound device on the laptop. If not, then post the make and model number of your unit so it can be researched.

Audio driver problem dell 1525 inspiron t8100

Well, according to Dell's site, if you have an Inspiron 8100 laptop that shipped with XP, then you should have the audio driver for ESS Maestro 3i: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R46297&SystemID=INS_PNT_P3CT_8100&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=692&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=5&catid=3&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=54266

go to http://support.dell.com, click on drivers then enter your laptops' Service Tag # for a more accurate download applicable to your machine. GL!

Inspiron 1521 SoundCard

Press and hold the <Fn> key while powering the system on. This will run the Dell Diagnostics. Another more intense diagnostic program is located on a Dell CD that you should have received with your laptop. Look for one that has “Diagnostics and utilities” listed under the “Contents”. You will have to boot from that CD disk. To do this, power on your laptop and tap the <F12> key to bring you to the “One time boot menu”. Insert the CD and then select CD/DVD drive and hit <Enter> key. Select the “Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics”. Select “Custom Tests” and run the audio test. If it works using the diagnostics then your sound circuit is O.K. If it fails the test then your motherboard will have to be replaced. The sound circuit is integrated into the motherboard.

Computer had virus, reinstalled, and now drivers dont work

Sounds like you need to re-load the device drivers for the display and modem. Dell maintains a very good library in their download secton for all the models that they made. Then use device manager to re-load the driver..

Sound card

Your laptop should have a sound card built into the board. To make sure, check for three round color coded holes anywhere along the edge of your laptop frame and ports. The Sound output is usually green. The sound in is blue and the mic in is red. If you plug in speakers n the green and don't here music, then check to see your SOUND DRIVERS are installed. If they are not no sound will play. The check for Sound drivers, right-click My Computer, then chose HARDWARE and let it list the components. Any one with a yellow mark needs drivers.
