Question about Pentair 1.0 Hp Whisperflo Pump

Pool pump won't prime. Impeller replaced, worked for a couple of days. I changed the filter now same as original problem won't prime. I thought perhaps it was clogged; however since it was running and there were leaves in the basket, I assume it's not clogged.

I removed filter and lubricated ring, cleaned area around ring, replaced filter and pump primed. It worked for the remainder of cycle. This morning when it was time for pump to go on, it didn't prime. Do you think the problem is within the filter or perhaps air getting in at one of the valves?

I'd appreciate any ideas someone might have.

    Thanking you in advance.

is this pump using a flooded suction or are you drawing water "up" to the pump housing?
If you are drawing the water "up" to the pump then you may have a bad check valve in the suction line going to the front of the pump. the check valve will hold the water in the line.

Non priming, hard to prime, or pump that loses prime = a suction leak somewhere between pool suction ports (skimmer / main drain) and the pump. Could be a shaft seal as well!
Check all threaded fittings, unions, and valves. Orings, etc.

Sounds like a priming problem. look at the check valve in front of the pump in the suction line. sounds as if it is loosing its prime so you don't have enough water close enough to the pump to get it primed.

Pool pump problem: Cavitation sound in spite of no blockages in suction lines. Replaced many parts and replumbed with no success.

me id make a temporary suction line that could be dropped right in the pool (half union, suction hose with brick tied on end) this would easy test the underground pipes/valves for any spider cracks (air inlets) observe the output using the ole pump if no improvement then sorry that ole pumps gotta go

frequently on old installs I find that winter weather wasn't so kind to the plastic pipes and they develop spider cracks(tiny ) this provides a path to suck air into line

I have an air leak in intake line

Question:

What do I do if my pool/spa pump is loosing suction or prime?

Answer: by Osko Pool n Spa Pool Pump Losing Suction or Prime If your Swimming Pools Filter system looses Prime, it is caused by one of the following conditions.
Note: The lost of suction/prime is caused a leak which in turn sucks air into the system. The lost of suction/prime will be anywhere from the Main Pool Skimmer(s) to the Pool Pump. It will NOT be from the Pool Pump to the Pools Main Return(s).
1) First make sure that your water level is high enough so that the skimmer is not sucking air.
2) Check the Pump Pot Housing Lid Seal and be certain that its completely sealing and is not
Sucking air into the system. Check the lid for cracks. If either condition is true, replace the Pump Pot Lid Seal and/or entire lid
3) Check all fittings, clamps and hoses from the pools skimmer to the Pools Pump Pot Housing for wear, tightness and leaks.
4) Check Pool Pump Pot Housing for cracks.
If everything aforementioned in good working order, the next thing to check is the Pump Pot Housing Main Seal and the Pumps Impeller and finally the pump.

5) While the Pool Pump Motor is running, carefully inspect the area where the Pump Pot Housing attaches to the Pump Motor. See if there is any water leaking. Next, spray the area with water and see if the water is sucked into the Housing. If so, your Main Seal is damaged.
6) Disassemble the front half of the Pump Pot Housing from the back half and inspect the Pump Motor Impeller. (This is a high suspect part). See if there is any sign of wear or breakage. (This happens over time from debris in the water passing over the impeller). If so, your Impeller is damaged.
7) Re-inspect the Pump Pot Housing Main Seal by standing the partially disassembled upright, with the Pump Motor towards the ground. Pour water over the impeller and into the cavity. See if the water leaks thru to the outside of the Pump Pot Housing. If so, your Main Seal is damaged.
8) Remove the cover from the rear of the Pump Motor. Using a large standard blade, (straight), screwdriver or wrench... turn the main motor shaft. Listen for grinding and/or rumbling and feel for any restrictions while turning. If you hear or feel either, your bearings and/or brushes are damaged.
If everything seems to be in good working order, then you need a new pump... not just replacement parts

Done every thing suggested. Still doenst prime. should I fill sand filter?

No prime = either impeller problem, air leak, or blockage on output(bad filter or bad valve) My first choice is dirty filter. Second choice is impeller. Both easy to check.
If you have checked those than you probably have an air leak. Hold a very slow running hose over all pipe joints running into filter, while motor is running. Most likely place is the screw in fitting on front of pump. The water from hose will temporarily seal leak and it should prime.

There is a air leak somewhere between the pool and the inlet to your pump --- probably the connection going into the pump housing from the pool. Put plumbers putty around the joint. Keep checking until you find the leak and the pump actually draws a suction. The impeller is sound, right? If not, replace it and the seal between the motor and the pump housing.

The water flow from my pump slows to almost nothing after 5 or 10 minutes. I change the filter and it has a great flow for a few minutes then slows to a trickle.

There are screens at the hose connections to the pump and at the inside pool outlets and inlets. Check to make sure their clear. Also be sure your using a New filter not one you have cleaned off.

Are vacuuming the pool . My sand filter does not work right it has no pressure going out to the pool. a pool store said it might be air bound .bleed the air out same thing

Do you have problems priming the system? If so you may have a suction leak in the plumbing attached to the front of the pump or a bad 0-ring seal in a valve. Symptom would be that when you set up to vac. The pump would lose prime or move very little water. Also maybe a clogged pump impeller.

Why is my filter system losing prime?

It could be one of these issues with your pool filter. Try these solutions. If none of them work, let me know and I will do some more research.

1. D.E. coated with normal accumulation of pool dirt, algae, etc.
Solution: Bump your filter.

2. Pump strainer basket or skimmer basket is clogged.
Solution: Clean

3. Pump impeller vanes clogged.
Solution: Cleaning with a stiff wire brush through the pump strainer opening will usually work. Alternate method would be to disassemble and clean.

4. Air Leak on suction side of pump.
Soultion: Check cover gasket, hand knobs, hose, clamps, etc. Replace or tighten as necessary.
