Problem with new dvd rewriter

I have a compaq sr2170nx system using Windows Vista and had hp 94i dvd burners. Well I recently purchased LG Super Multi dvd rewriter and can not get them to work no matter what I do. Is there something I can check. I have tried one at a time with the same settings as I had for the HP. When I put a music cd in they can not read info correctly, therefor will no play.

I am using IDE interface cable. Went in and installed two drives, one in the MA and the other as SL. When installing them I even disonnect all power to computer. When it started up it actually search for driver and then said all was installed, so I thought it was correct. Well tried to play a cd and it would not play. So I did the sam using only one drive and setting it to MA position and had the same results. went back in and installed theold drive and it plays the cd fine. The reason for changeis that one drive seems to have problems with lightscribe and the other seems to have reading problems.

I have checked and made sure that the dvd set to master was using the master connector on the ide cable and the dvd set to Slave was using rhe slave connector. Still nothing works properly

Well. its not only the drivers, did you changed the pins behind the items to make the master and slave? they always come as master from the factory. If you dont change the pins you wont get them to work properly or work at all. and make sure that you connect them correct on the IDE cable, you should connect the master to the master connector on the ide cable and the slave on the slave connector on the cable

Did you connected them via sata cable or IDE cable?
If you used an IDE cable did you set them as MASTER and SLAVE?

Buy another IDE cable(if you didnt get one with the drive) and keeping the rewriter on master plug it in the secondary IDE channel on the motherboard.

So the config should be like this:
Primary IDE connector on the mobo (useually blue/black) connected to hdd set to master at the cable end
Secondary IDE connector on the mobo connected with a seperate cable (80 pin cable for high speed preferrably) to the rewritable set to master at cable end

Cheers
rate if its fixed

What type of DVD does the HP Pavilion p7-1672pc use?

It's supposed to use both. Super Multi DVD+- optical drive.
Super Multi indicates it will use both.

However read these two articles,

Just bought a new DVD burner, its a LG Super Multi DVD ReWriter 22x (Gh22LS40) I also had to buy a sata to IDE converter for my motherboard that has only IDE connectors on it. I can not get Windows 7 to...

ok here's what you need to do.....

first check your dvd burner if its is detected properly on your cmos. If it is located properly try to re install windows 7 again i've encountered this problem before and i just reinstalled windows 7 and it worked like charm.

If the dvd burner is not detected on cmos try to check the jumper settings for both hard disk and dvd burner one orf the other should not be on the same setting ex. if your disk drive is on master you should set the dvd on slave and vice versa. then redo the first step. hope this helps

What is the software for?
If you want to record CDs and DVDs then you need Nero or Sonic record now.
windowsXP has a built in CD recording program butnot for DVDs
Windows Vista can record CDs and DVDs but neither operating systems program can copy CDs.

LG super multi drive identified as CDROM by Windows XP

First, thank you for the excellent description. I wish more FixYa clients would provide complete information like that.

Unless you are having problems, I wouldn't worry about the product designation in XP since it's LG drive that is identifying it as such during XP's device discovery routine. Your new LG drive can handle all of the different DVD rewritable formats - i.e. DVD-RAM, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW - so it appears that it is just using the first as its designator.

In my laptop, my LG DVD writer is designated as follows in Device Manager:

HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T10N ATA Device

LG describes it as a "Slim DVD Super-Multi Drive". I've had no problems with it, and it has worked flawlessly to burn CDs and DVDs.
