This is because your linksys router is dropping the connection with your ISP Modem... It can be even an issue of modem...
To isolate the issue, what you can do is... You can connect your computer directly to the Modem and you can check for any intermittant connectivity... if you dont have any problem with your modem, then definitely its gonna be the problem with your Linksys Router...
Doing a reset for the router and reconfiguring will resolve the issue in most of the cases... If in case if it doesnt works, then you can do a firmware update for the router (that would be found in linksys router support website)... Even then if it is dropping the connection then definitely it is a faulty router...You can ask for a replacement if the product is still under hardware & software warranty...
1.Log into router 2. Verify wireless router name( on the computer) >>> ( on/off) 3.Note router name you are connecting to. 4.. Check the laptop do ipconfig /all to see current IP addresses. 5. Set the laptop up in the router by WEP KEY or MAC address. 6.Note router name you are connecting to. 7. Move the laptop about 20ft away and try to log on to the internet. This is for all routers to set up wirelessly.
Have you tried power cycling the router and the modem? if not:
1. Turn off your modem and router by unplugging the power cord at the back of the devices.
2. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the router vice versa
3. After a minute, replug the power cord at the back of your modem then reconnect the ethernet cable at the back of the modem as well.
4. After a minute, replug the power cord and the ethernet cable at the back of your router.
5. Try to test the connection.
Warning: You can reset the router if you know that you can reconfigure it back to connect to the internet. If you don't know how to set the router back to connect to the internet, it would be ok to you to not to do step 6.
6. If it didn't work, You can reset the modem. Press the reset button at the back of your router while it's turned on, wait for 15 seconds after that, unplug the power cord at the back of the router while the reset button is still pressed, wait for 15 seconds after that, replug the power cord at the back of your router while the reset button is still pressed, wait for 15 seconds again then release the reset button after 15 seconds.
7. Reconfigure your router's settings to communicate to your modem. ( I don't know if you have cable internet connection, but if so, you can just clone the mac address of your modem to connect to the server, if you are using DSL if it's asking for a username and passowrd, just use the PPPoE type of configuration in your router)
8. If it failed, try to update the firmware of your router.
1) With direct connect with modem, check the IP address and default gateway. (I came across such a modem, it gave default gateway as 192.168.1.254) I also had the doubt of configuring as a dynamic connection But it won't work! Contact your ISP to completely bridge the modem and configure the dsl modem as PPPoE connection with correct username and password. Finally connect the modem to router and do a complete network power cycle, i.e.: Unplug power from router 1st, then power from modem, unplug the telephone line and now do the exact reverse process... Plug back the tel. cable, then power to modem... now WAIT for lights on modem to come back, then plug in the power to router. This will surely work.
do you have internet with the modem? if you do then router is not configure correctly. If you do nothave internet ask you ISP why you are not online with the modem directly.
Do the following steps in order, checking to see if you're reconnected to the internet after each step.
1) Check all of your connections, make sure that all of the cables are plugged in securely and to the correct ports.
2) Reboot your modem and/or router. If this PC is connected directly to a cable/dsl modem, unplug the modem's power cord, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. Wait a minute or so and then check your internet connectivity. -If the PC is connected to a router that is connected to the modem, unplug the power to both the modem and the router. Wait 30 seconds, reconnect power to the modem. Wait a minute or so and reconnect power to the router. Wait a minute or so and check your internet connectivity.
3) Do a ping test to see if you are connected at all. Click the Start button, and on the Start Menu, select "Run." A small window comes up, in which you will type "cmd" (without quotations) and press ENTER. A command prompt window will come up with a blinking cursor. At the cursor type "ping yahoo.com" (without quotations) and press ENTER. Your PC will send 4 transmissions to see if yahoo.com responds. You will see about 10 lines on your screen - the 3rd line from the bottom should read something like this: "Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss)" If you have 4 received and 0 lost, you're connected to the internet, move on to step 4. If you get 0 received and 4 lost, you're not communicating at all with the internet, skip ahead to step 5.
4) You're connected to the internet because you got a response from yahoo.com. Now we just need to get your browser working. Still in the command prompt window, type the following command (without quotes): "netsh winsock repair" then press ENTER
5) Go into the Control Panel and go to Network. Check your network connections to make sure that they are working properly and are Enabled.
If this doesn't get you reconnected, send me a message and we'll go for round 2!
Hope this helps. Please take a moment to rate this solution. Thanks.
-- what is the operating system of your computer? -- is this working fine before or is this a brand new router
i have read the same problem on the supportrix forum and you may try this and see if this help solve your problem. make sure your computer is directly connected to the router
Step 1: Shutdown the computer. Step 2: reset the router while power on then Unplug the router’s power cable. Step 3: Unplug the Broadband modem’s power cable and wait for 30 seconds. Step 4: Plug in the Broadband modem’s power cable and wait for its lights to appear stable. Step 5: Plug in the router's power cable once the modem’s lights appear stable. Step 6: Power on the computer on and configure the router settings Step 7: test the Internet connection.
if this still didnot work, upgrade the firmware of your router and repeat the same steps.
note:
configuring the router settings will depends who is your provider. if your isp is dsl you need to configure your ISP username (email address format) and password on the router. if your router is a cable no need to change any settings on the router. it should automatically work
if you are still having trouble configuring your device, try to call supportrix
You can try doing a "Hard reset" on the modem but it looks like you've tried most combinations. To do the hard reset:
- unplug the coax cable from the back of the modem
- Push and hold the "reset" button in for 15 seconds
- Allow the modem 30 seconds to reinitialize and then plug the coax cable back in.
Within 10minutes you should have activity back. If not, the modem needs to be replaced. I know you may have tried something similar to this but I'm hoping this may help.
