Question about Compaq Armada M700 Notebook

Advent 7016 (AKA Gericom Blockbuster 251S)main

Advent 7016 (AKA Gericom Blockbuster 251S) main battery failed. Now only works on mains. A new battery won't take a charge or power the laptop. One school of thought is that the fault is a blown power controller chip on the motherboard. Another idea is that its a blown surface-mount fuse on the mobo. Yet another idea is that swapping the CMOS battery will fix it (but surely it wouldn't run on mains if the CMOS battery was flat).
Please help as I was pestered into getting this cheap laptop on eBay for a friend. Unfortunately this failure has now become a very embarrasing situation as PC Worlds repair fee is as much as a new laptop.

It was the BATTERY all along !!!!! Incidentally the new battery bought mail order from China was no good as it would not boot-up the laptop. The curious thing was that if the laptop was booted-up using mains power, the Chinese battery would then last long enough to play an entire feature film and more! The "Tech Guys" test battery was also no good and the technicians at that well known computer store claimed that the laptop was faulty, WRONG! Eventually I bought a scrap laptop of a similar type with a view to swapping the power controller board. The scrap laptop happened to have a battery fitted so the "scrap" battery was tried. Voila! all came good! After THREE dud batteries (including the test battery at the computer store) the problem was solved.

One can surmise that during the boot-up, computers take a heavy power draw. One can also surmise that the Lithium Ion batteries have current limiters built-in in order to prevent them from catching fire. If the current limiter is set too low the laptop will not boot. Those 2.8 GHz Pentium 4s were always renowned as hungry power-guzzlers and that was the problem.

The sad thing was that once it was all fixed-up, defragged and memory maxed-out, it got stolen in a burglary. Shame as it was a really good machine. These days I ONLY buy crappy low powered computers as why donate an i5 or i7 machine to your local drug addicts?

The battery terminal on your motherboard may be broken or has a short. You may need to get to a repair shop or get a new motherboard to replace the current one.

My advent modena m202 will only work through mains power supply. I have a brand new batter which I was only able to charge in my old laptop. so m202 is not charging and wont work with fully charged

If the battery is OK then there may be an issue with the contacts that connect the battery to the motherboard or the regulator on the mother board has failed due to a previously faulty battery, in which a motherboard repair is required.

Advent Roma 1001 laptop. Turning on the laptop via the mains supply, the laptop springs to life and have no problems. The battery icon shows 100% charged and the battery l.e.d. light glows blue. Turn off...

The fact that the laptop is recognising the battery's presence and yet is not receiving any power from it is not a good sign I'm afraid. There are batteries available online for around £40 but you may want to take the laptop to a repair centre first where they can usually tell you (for around £7-£10) if it is definitely a battery malfunction or not before you splash out on a new one.
Sorry I can't be any more help, battery issues are usually pretty black and white, they're either broken or working. Hope you manage to get it sorted either way.

Anybody got the driver link to download for an advent laptop as my function keys dont show on screen but work fine

The Advent support site is rubbish. All drivers/utils they list are easily available else where. The ones that can't be found elsewhere aren't given. Useful. However...

For OLDER Advent Laptops/Notebooks and most Advent PCs are made by 'Medion' a German firm. Their website supplies ALL drivers, utils etc for your laptop by the Medion (MD) model number. This you will find on the back of your laptop and will usually begin with a MD- reference (ignore the Advent model number ****).

Stick this model number, or your serial number if you're using a PC, in here: http://www1.medion.de/downloads/?lang=uk and it will list all the applicable drivers for your notebook.

For NEWER Advent Laptops/Notebooks a Tawainese company called ECS manufacturer the Notebooks. You will find the 'ECS' number on the back of your laptop, similar to ECS-G610 for example (thats the model number for the Advent 7091). This can then be used to search for relevent drivers/BIOS' etc here:

http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Downloads/Category_Download.aspx?Categoryid=3&MenuID=37&LanID=9

For MUCH OLDER Advent Laptops/Notebooks a company named as Gericom manufactured the notebooks (also known as Gericon in Germany it seems) and also sold under the name's of 'Mecer', 'Acer' and 'Uniwill', among others. These have model numbers similar to N340S8 etc.

Tracking drivers for these is pretty hard, but these guys seem to still have them on an old section of their site:

http://ftp.mustek.co.za/drivers/list.php?dir=Repository%2F
and by product name (which wasn't used by Advent)
http://www.acomp.hu/pub/gericom/Notebook/
also from the actual source (Gericom) but by product name again

Advent 7113 doesn't detect mains

It is highly posible that the jack in your laptop where you plug the main dapter is making a false contcat due to a problem in the welding of its connectors to the main board or to corrosion. Check if the rentral plug is not loose or if the plugs seems to be loose when you plug it.
If it is so, you need some expert technician to solve the problem by re weilding it or replacing it.
