What device is it you trying to connect?

Did you test to connect any other device like an MP3..or an USB-memostick to see if you getting the same error?

Just because it says it doesn't recognise it doesn't mean it won't work. Plus if it's a device needing drivers you should download and install the drivers first then attach the usb cable. Go to the manufacturers website and find the drivers for the product downloading and installing the proper ones for the version of windows you have.

Also if you had listed what it was.... make and model could've given you a link to the drivers

My Acer Aspire 5100 tells me that my USB port are

Check the driver status of the USB. You can do this by accessing the Device Manager. For users using Windows XP, just click the Start icon. On the Run box, type devmgmt.msc. You can also do the same with Vista.

Next thing, check for devices with an (!) sign with a yellow background. These devices needs driver update or correct driver should be installed.

For a start, you can do a Windows Update. Click Start, All Programs, and then Windows Update. This will download patches for your system.

Acer Aspire 5100 Problem , Keyboard not working even you plug another one on USB port , USB port also not working while the notebook is on and full charge

Take a look in Device Manager to make sure all devices are working correctly and that there are NO Yellow or Red marks.
If Yellow Exclimation is on the device, try reinstalling the driver for that device.
If Red X Mark is on the device, enable that device.
If this does not solve your issue, you should take your Laptop to your local computer repair shop.
Good Luck.

Acer notebook usb not recognized

Sounds like a hardware issue. I would guess that there is a bad connection between the usb's and the motherboard. If you are comfortable dismanteling the laptop and re-soldering the usb's than give that a try, but I would recomend you give it to a pro.
Here is a link that explains the process. http://www.insidemylaptop.com/taking-apart-acer-aspire-5100-laptop/

Touchpad on acer aspire 5100 series is locked

plug in a usb mouse, go to control panel>system>harware>device manager and click on the + sign next to pointing devices. Right click the touchpad and click on uninstall. Reboot the laptop and unplug the usb mouse. This should pick up the touchpad as new hardware and reinstall it. Hopefully this will resolve the problem.

All USB ports not working

Sounds like a shorted out board. If you use a faulty device.. these can EASILY short out the USB controllers on the motherboard.

Alternative is to purchase a "PCMCIA USB expansion card" till you can replace the motherboard.

best wishes.
