Plays cds but not dvds

I got a Digital Labs portable DVD player. And I just got a charger for it. My question is what will cause the dvd player play cds but not dvds. It will play cds just fine but, when you try a dvd it says invalid disk. the cd can be all scrached up and it will play it but, not a dvd or a new dvd.

If the lens is clean (clean with cotton swab and alcohol), then the optics are failing. DVDs require more power and accuracy to be read than CDs. The ability to read CDs but not DVDs is usually a good indication that the optics are starting to fail.
