What partitions does your computer have? In "My Computer", do you have a C:\ Drive and a D:\ or E:\Recovery Drive?

Are you getting a pop up message in the bottom right hand corner above the clock about the drive being full?

You should check if your PSU is providing enough power to the hard drive. In case the hard drive requires more power, you should either replace it or get a better PSU.

How to deal with different multiple partitions on a large capacity hard drive

There are many people who wish that they have the maximum storage capacity available in their hard disk.

The more space you have these days, makes you urge for some more .
Therefore when your satisfaction was with a 250 GB hard drive , in some time you would feel a 500 GB hard disk is something which you require.

No wonder due to increase software technology and their huge you will need a large storage space. It's not surprising to see software in multiple GBs for e.g.a Adobe suite would take approx around 5 + Gbs of space depending on the applications you want.

Therefore the best way to manage your hard disk drive is as follows :-

1. Create as much partitions as you require , and don't be lazy about it. :- Many people as a result of excitement just want to go ahead with the windows installation or an operating system's installation , without considering the hard disk state, i.e. without actually partitioning the hard disk and then going ahead with the installation of the operating system.

However this attitude does not help when you have the only partition that you trusted is damaged , not everyone knows damage recovery and may end up believing that he has lost all valuable data and will reinstall the operating system after a full format.

2.
Separate the partitions for Operating systems and your personal data :- Even though you have options like my documents and my pictures in your root drive where the operating system has been installed , it's always better to keep your personal files in another partition besides the root drive , as you never know when the root drive would be affected by virus and your master boot record would be damaged , and then you would end up formatting your drive.

3.
Create partitions based on the sorting of your personal /official files :-

If you want to have multiple partitions have them on the basis of your work. For instance , it's always better to have a separate partition for your official work so that you can have a timely backup and don't mix it up with your personal files be it your home videos or pictures.

4.
Name them such that you can identify them easily :-

How many times has it happened that you are searching for something by opening up the different partitions that exist and then getting frustrated as a result ? You know the data is there, but you just don't know where. Therefore the solution to this problem would be to rename the partition itself in a way that when you want to search for some data , you know which partition you want to search for the data.

Hope this helps ..:)

Hard Disk Data Recovery

Definition of Hard Disk: Hard Drive is a storage device where you can store any types of data and file. Hard Drive is available as external and internal device. We know PC storage device as internal system Hard Disk. When you save data or install programs on your computer, the information is typically written to your Hard Disk. The Hard Disk is a spindle of magnetic disks, called platters, that record and store information. There are several interface standards for passing data between a Hard Disk and a computer. The most common are IDE and SCSI. Hard Disk is made of one or more aluminium or glass platters, coated with a ferromagnetic material. Most Hard Disks are found as Parallel ATA (PATA), Serial ATA (SATA) or SCSI device.

Difference with Floppy Drive:
The term hard is used to distinguish it from a soft, or floppy, disk. Hard Disks hold more data and also faster than floppy disks. As an example a Hard Disk can store anywhere from 10 to more than 100 gigabytes, where most floppies have a maximum storage capacity of 1.4 megabytes. Floppy is more risky device than Hard Disk for losing data.
Problem with Hard Disk:

Most common problems of Hard Disk which may arise anytime are Booting problem, OS Installation problem, Hard drive crashing and another Hard Disk not showing original space or not showing partition etc. But in every case the risk is loss of data. In some of cases formatting and reloading of Operating System can recover your Hard drive and make it useful but formatting can recover a blank Hard Disk only without data. But you have to recover Hard Disk with data, so formatting is not possible.

Data Recovery:

Data recovery is the process of retrieving back data from the damaged media. The damage of storage media can be physical damage and logical damage. The data is retrieved back by recovery experts after determining the type of the damage caused to the storage media. Most of cases data recovery is important and formatting is not possible there. So that I need to choose another way for solution of this type of problems of Hard Disk. The first and secure way to recover a Hard Disk is using data recovery software.

Recover Data from crashed Hard Disk: Power surges, Software Corruption or Malfunction, Hardware or system failure, Natural calamities, User errors may crash your Hard Drive. Data recovery software helps to retrieve or recover the data from the crashed hard Drive. Data recovery software gives an easy and Graphical User Interface with less difficulty so that the data can be recovered easily. The recovery software helps to recover the data and restore them on a second Hard Disk, the Hard Disk being connected to the computer and recognized by the BIOS, the recovered data can be stored on a safe location on the second disk.

Logical data recovery: In a data loss situation when the Hard Drive is perfectly fine and the BIOS recognizes the Hard Drive but reports a read error, logical data recovery technique is very helpful. Here the files that are damaged or corrupted by any user error or virus attack are rebuilt rather than repairing the Hard Drive.

Fragmentation: When the FAT entry is lost during accidental file deletion, formatting or partition deletion that particular block of Hard Drive becomes inaccessible. Some data recovery software makes an attempt to rebuild the files without a FAT entry. This technique is very efficient if the file size is smaller than the clusters size. But it is inefficient in recovery the larger files.

Data Recovery from deleted partition: Partition is allocation of memory in different sections. Each partition will be like separate disk drives. Partition is very use full when the user is using operating systems more than one. Usually after formatting the disk it may not be able to recognize a partition because of accidental deletion of the partition table or by virus infection. The partition is not actually deleted; it can be recovered by using recovery tools and copy the data present in the partition to the required destination. Formatting the drive erases a large amount of data present on it, but not all the data. The recovery of the data depends on the fragmentation of the file system as the parts of files are being placed on different places in the drive. The data recovery software will assume that files were not fragmented and stored in continuous clusters. If the partition was formatted using different file system, then recovery process will be very complicated.

Another Data recovery process: If you don't have any data recovery software you can try another process to recover data. Attach the Hard Drive with another system in slave or second SATA.If detect the drive then boot to the first Hard Drive and use the bad Hard Drive as secondary. Then you can copy the data from the second drive to first drive easily. Here have another process to recover data from a crashed Hard Disk. But it is so risky, and should not try to do this for an inexpert person. First pack the Hard Disk in a bag properly where moisture can't attack. Now freeze it upto get chill. After freezing quickly attach with a system in secondary, and copy the data within the Drive will come in room temperature.

So the most secure process to recover data from a Hard Disk is to use data recovery software. It is available in market.

It is a hard drive failure you need to get your hard drive serviced or replace it with a new one
please get a recovery of your hard disk if you need to get the data on it as replacing the hard drive with a new one will not give you the data ...or even if you need to get the current hard drive repaired first get a recovery copy of the files and then ask them to repair it as repairing will damage the file system and will result in permanent loss of data from the drive .

My aspire l310 won't boot. It keeps telling me media cable test failure and disk boot failure. Help daniel

sounds like hard disk related. turn it off and disconnect the power cord, remove and reconnect both the power and data cables to the hard disk, disconnect any external USB storage and remove any floppy disk, if any. If you get the same result, try to connect the har disk using different power & data cables (IDE/SATA), and test it on another SATA channel if available. If same error, you may need to reformat the hard disk and reinstall WIndows, or you may have to get a new Hard Disk if it fails even when tried on another computer.

Maintain Your Hard Drive.

Your hard disk drive is one of the most important parts of your PC. It's where all your system files, applications and user data is kept. Most people understand the issue of security, the importance of making regular backups of your user data as an insurance policy against hard drive crashes. Few people realise and appreciate the importance of having regular hard disk maintenance which is designed to keep it in good working order.

The ultimate way to revitalise and cleanse your PC is to wipe the hard drive, start from scratch and then reinstall the operating system. However, there is much you can do to avoid such a situation arising, simply by using utilities provided within the bundle of your Windows operating system.

Disk cleanup
The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space by searching your disk for unwanted files that you can safely delete. It can remove all of the following:

Temporary Internet files.
Files in the Recycle Bin.
Temporary Windows files located in the Temporary files folder.
Optional Windows components that you are not using.
Installed programs that you no longer use.

To launch Disk Cleanup via Start menu go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
slasher_x_4.gif

A dialogue window should now appear enabling you to select the drive you want to clean up. Select the required drive and click OK.
slasher_x_5.gif
The specified drive will be exampined and the amount of space you can potentially free up is calculated.
slasher_x_6.gif
The results, showing the amount of space that can be recovered by deleting files that are not needed are then displayed on the Disk Cleanup tab.
slasher_x_7.gif

Error Checking
Chkdsk.exe is a utility which verifies the logical integrity of a file system. In the event of the utility encountering logical inconsistencies in file system data, it will perform the necessary actions to repair the file system data. The same utility in earlier versions of Windows was called to as ScanDisk.

To Launch Chkdsk go to My Computer and right-click the hard disk you want to have checked. Then click Properties and select the Tools tab.
slasher_x_8.gif
Click on Check Now.

A dialogue box showing the Check disk options is displayed.
slasher_x_9.gif
Select the appropriate options and click Start.

You may get the following message.
slasher_x_10.gif
If so click Yes and your computer will reboot and then perform the scan.

Disk Defragmentation
Since files are constantly being written, deleted and over written to the hard drive, files are likely to become fragmented and scattered all over the drive. The disk defragment tool takes these files and puts them in order by eliminating spaces between files.

To start the disk defragment tool go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
slasher_x_12.gif
Then select the Tools tab and click Defragment Now.
slasher_x_8.gif
It should now display the hard drives showing total capacity as well as the free space of the drive(s).
slasher_x_13.gif
Now select the drive you want to defragment and click Analyse.
slasher_x_14.gif
The drive is scanned and a visual representation of how it is currently fragmented is displayed.

Depending on the the results of the analysis, you will be advised as to whether or not the volume should be defragmented.
slasher_x_15.gif
Even if it's not necessary, you can choose to Defragment anyway if you like.

The time it takes to defragment the hard drive is dependent on the size of the drive, how the fragmentation lies and how much free space it has.

As the drive defrags you can see how it is neatly repacking the files by looking at the bottem visual bar.
slasher_x_16.gif
Once it is complete you will get the following message
slasher_x_17.gif
You can choose to view the report which will show hard drive information such as free space, used space, cluster size and the free space as a percentage. Or you can just lick Close as the defragmentation is now complete.

Doing these checks frequently will prolong the lifespan of your hard drive and make sure it's running at maximum speed.

How to intall windows 7 from pen drive...

How to install Windows 7 from a .iso without burning onto a DVD

proxy?url=http%3a%2f%2f1.bp.blogspot.com%2f_uu-faylkkn4%2fs5sjwgyglri%2faaaaaaaaih0%2fwwn5u85pula%2fs400%2fwindows7_logo.jpg&container=focus&gadget=a&rewritemime=image%2f*&refresh=31536000 Windows 7 doesnot allow you to install off the same Hard Disk. But if you didn't want to burn the .iso image of Windows 7 that you downloaded to a new DVD - you can still install it off the .iso file by using the method below.
You will need a portable hard disk / pen drive though.
Incase, you have a portable hard disk or a pen drive - do the following : 1. Get WinRar (www.rarlabs.com) and install the software on your machine. WinRar is similar to winzip but supports many other formats including .iso. 2. Extract the .iso of Win7 to your pen drive / portable hard disk. Place the extracted files into the root of the drive - your other data can be put into folders. 3. Restart your laptop and hold F9 / F2 to enter into boot-menu which gives you a choice to load from. Here select your pen-drive / portable hard disk - usually a USB device.
Done - that's all it takes. You can now go ahead with the normal install process.

Hard drive failure in system less than 2 years old!!

Since you are comfortable with working inside your computer, the best thing to do now is to purchase an external enclosure for your type of hard drive, SATA or EIDE.

Alternately you can use a live linux cd, boot up with that, and transfer your data to an external drive.

Once your data is safe, try booting to the Windows cd and attempt a repair installation.

And finally, yes, hard drives can go bad in 2 years or less.

That error message means invalid destination disk, which means your hard drive. Often just moving your computer will cause bad things to happen!
You should back track and make sure you have all tight connections. Accidents happen!!
Possibly your hard drive went out but as a last resort, try reinstalling your operating system.
