Dell XPS M1710 - Screen flickers at times when playing games

I am running XP with 4 gig of Ram. During game play parts of my screen with either have lines streaming from the objects on the screen on a diagonal line to other objects or at other times I have sections that are solid colors of triangles pointing to the center of the screen. This doesnt happen all the time...just when it seems to be running a little warmer.

Hi,
reboot your system and at the blue dell logo tap the F2 Key, and now you will be at the bios screen

check if you get these lines at this screen on the screen and if you get these lines here as well, you might have a hardware problem call dell technical support for this, they will run a few diagnostics and if needed replace the faulty hard ware.

The screen flickers when I am playing games requiring a high resolution. I sometimes have to turn the monitor on and off a couple of times before I get to see anything on the screen. Most times the images...

If it's a few years old the power inverter could be going, otherwise it likes to run at the "native resolution" all monitiors have a "naitive resolution" i just means the resolution that the manufacturer recomends. It should be in your booklet, also diagnosing games is tough because they are graphic intense. There is a site called "can I run it" that will tell you if your machine can run specific tests. I play Call of duty modern warfare, And with dual SLI video cards I just about run it, with a dual core and 2 gigs of ram. This is subjective at best. also the refresh rate on your monitor plays a big role in these games, anything slower than 5ms is too slow for most new games. Mine are 1 and 2 MS. check the box ou the game it will tell you the minimums

How much upgarade need to play gta4

Hi Thanks for your question
I'm afraid you will not be able to play this game on your PC. Unfortunately this game requires dual core processor and your motherboard will not support it. These are minimum requirements
* OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3
* Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz, AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4Ghz
* Memory: 1.5GB, 16GB Free Hard Drive Space
* Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA 7900 / 256MB ATI X1900

I hope this clarifies the case for you. Hope this helps

Sounds like you have a driver issue that is conflicting with a current setting. Do you play games that are very demanding on your video resources? What you can do is uninstall the driver or roll it back and restart the computer. Helps if you have the driver file for which ever video card you have, I have the 7950gtx and it never had any problems with Left 4Dead or Unreal Tournament. I keep a notebook cooler handy when I'm gaming.

Black screen

It sounds as though the screen went out if you have access to a monitor and you have a vga plug on your computer try to hook it up to the other monitor and see if you are able to see anything. Sometimes when you hook up to an external monitor you will need to push the associated funtion keys. like i said if images show up then it is the screen on the laptop. If nothing shows up then it is the video hardware. If this is the case you will probably need to buy a new notebook since these are not normally changeable.

Me again with the dell 1330

Yeah, I figured this would help ya. There's no way around the internal card, but keep in mind that the 256 is up to 256, it only uses what it needs up to 256, and really shouldn't ever get to the 256 level, unless you're gaming with some extreme graphics and hooked to multiple monitors. You're topped out at 4g, but 4g is huge and again, you'll never use it all unless your gaming with it, and it doesn't sound like you're gaming with it. An example of a serious gamer is one of my customers that my partner and I set up a system that consists of 1 Alienware gaming tower as a server, with a 1 terabyte hard drive with 8g ram, 1 Alienware gaming laptop, with 2 300g hard drives and 6g ram, and 2 Dell XPS laptops, both with 250g hard drives and 4g ram. All connected to 5, 24 inch flat panel monitors and surround sound for the full panoramic experience. This is gaming at the extreme. Me personally, I'm content with solitaire. Glad you're happy with the performance, sorry you wasted the $120, sell it on Ebay, somebody will buy it, and if you need anything else feel free to ask.
