Secondary Master and Slave dosn't work. Why?

Cabel controlled, in BIOS you can see only: Auto, but the hard disk or
DVD hard drive dosn't work.

Hard Drive a Slave Drive Setting a hard drive to function as the secondary ("slave") drive allows you to use the drive solely as a storage unit. You can use the drive to back up valuable data on the primary drive without having to install or use an operating system on it. And all you need to get going is a screwdriver to pop the case open.

Never open the power source. Some of the below steps recommend removing physical parts within the computer. While in the computer it is highly recommend that you be aware of ESD and its potential hazards Disconnect all of the cables and then put the computer on a stable work surface such as a desk or a chair. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws securing the side paneling of the case. The screws are located at the back of the computer and along the edges--only remove the screws securing the case. Unhinge any case latches on the computer. Slide the side paneling of the case off the computer. Some case designs require you to remove the whole case, and some are broken down into removable panels. Remove enough of the case to have both sides of the computer exposed. Discharge any static that may have accumulated on your clothing before handling any internal components. Rub your hands against a solid metal portion of the case to discharge the static. Locate the hard drive. It should be secured in a station of bays adjacent to the motherboard--it'll also be near your DVD/CD-ROM and floppy disk drives. Remove the screws that secure the hard drive to the bay. Slowly slide the drive out of the bay. The drive will be connected to a data and power cable. You can temporarily disconnect them to take the drive out completely and give yourself more room to work with--but remember to reconnect them. Locate the jumper pins on the hard drive. There will be a diagram displaying the proper jumper settings for a given hard drive mode. Follow the diagram and set the pin cap in its slave position on the hard drive--for example, some drives may require the cap to be placed on the last two pins to set the drive as a slave.

SATA, a newer drive technology, is a jumperless system and does not allow for master/slave settings, which makes SATA drives easier to install.

Shut down your computer. Unplug all cables and peripheral devices. Remove the left side panel while facing the front of the case. Remove screws, manipulate latches or perform other necessary steps to remove the panel. (Please see your computer or case manufacturer's documentation if you are unsure of how to remove the side panel, as this process varies.) Turn the case so that you are facing the open, previously left side of the case. Locate your drive bays. The 5.25-inch optical bays are at the top right and the 3.5-inch hard disk bays are towards the bottom right. You should be able to locate the necessary bay easily by matching your slave drive with the master drive. Clip the anti-static wrist bracelet to a metal object, and attach the bracelet to your wrist. Remove the drive from its anti-static packaging. Locate the pins on the back of the hard disk or optical drive. Jumper configurations vary according to model and manufacturer, and most manufacturers show the configurations on the drive itself. Configure the jumper according to the hard disk manufacturer's instructions. Insert the hard disk or optical drive into the appropriate bay. Secure it by screwing in at least two mounting screws. Attach an available controller cable to your drive. Most controller cables feature a Y-split cable, which makes it easy to find and attach the secondary cable that links to your primary drive. Insert the power supply cable into the port on the drive. Again, you may be able to plug in a secondary cable split from the power supply's cable to the master drive. Double-check all connections. Remove the anti-static wrist bracelet, then reattach all cables and peripheral devices. b> Configure the BIOS b> Start the computer. Enter your BIOS by immediately pressing the BIOS setup key, as shown onscreen. (Most computers feature a "Press X to enter BIOS setup" message after you hear the computer beep. Press this key. If you do not see this message, please consult your computer's documentation, as the BIOS key varies according to your motherboard.) Navigate to system setup and allow the BIOS to auto-detect the new drive. Save and exit the BIOS. Reattach the side panel if the drive is working correctly. Hope this helps.

I hav ejust purchased a new lg gh22 dvd writer. It is working fine in operating system like windows xp and ubuntu. The bios also recognizes the drive. But when i insert a bootable cd/dvd of ubuntu windows...

Is the hard disk drive is in secondary slave? If yes, change it to master and your dvd is into slave. Refer to the jumper settings at the back on the drive. If not work, your bootable disk may defective. Try other a botable disk.

there are few thing you ahve to keep in mind

there are two type of hard disk
1. IDE
2. SATA

As per your hdd capacity it should of IDE type.

Now there are two IDE slots on motherboard. One is Primary and other is Secondary

You can fix two hdd with one IDE Slot that mean you can fix up upto faour IDE hdd at a time

Now again there are Primary master and Primary Slave

and

Secondary Master and Secondary Slave

Now You have to examine what was the location of previous hdd
1 Primary Master
2 Primary Slave
3 Secondary Master
4 Secondary Slave.

Now you have to make a HDD master or Slave.

just in between data cable connector and power cable connector there is a jumper. that specify the master or slave. do reply me if it works well thanks

Once you reset the bios everything goes to manufactures default settings. You will need to make some changes within the bios. You'll need the help of the manual. See page 3-20.
If your operating system is loaded on to the ATA IDE drive make sure you set bios settings as follows:
Connect the ATA IDE to MB primary master IDE port.
Connect the ATA SATA drive to the MB's first SATA port.

ATA Configuration
Set as, [P-ATA+S-ATA]
S-ATA Keep [Enabled] Set to [Yes] This enables the SATA controller.
P-ATA Keep [Enabled] Set to [Yes] This enables the IDE controller.
On-chip IDE configuration, "ATA Configuration = [P-ATA+S-ATA]".
Next go to Boot menu. Make sure the ATA IDE drive is chosen as boot device three.
First boot device [Floppy] (If you have a floppy disk drive connected.)
Second boot device would be [DVD/CD-ROM] drive. This should be connected to the MB's secondary IDE port & the DVD/CD-ROM drives Master/Slave jumper, set to Master.
Third boot device [ATA IDE drive]
If your boot drive is the SATA drive than set: third boot device to the SATA drive.
(Hard disk drive with operating system loaded on it).
Save your changes & exit the bios.
Keep in mind all ATA SATA drives are seen as Master drives. SATA drives are seen by the SATA controller & in order by their connection to the SATA port number.
Save & exit the bios. The system will auto restart. Windows should start.

Hi,
usually when you update or re-flash the dvd rom.
it will state :- ensure that the drive to be flashed should be jumper set as master. if there were other drives connected to the same ide channel. this could have caused damage to the other drives connected. Or the IDE Channels themselves.
The only suggestion I have for you. is to remove all the drives. disconnect the power from the computer. and remove the cmos battery, for 10-15 seconds. resetting the computers bios back to defaults. then re-settup the drives ensuring that the jumpers are correct for each drive. i.e 1 slave and 1 master on each ide cable.

How set the hard drive and dvd-rom


first idea is to set the Hard drives on the primary controller on the same cable, having your hard drive with windows as the master and the other as slave ( do this with the jumpers).

Next put your cd\dvd drive on the other cable on the secondary ide (the name is usually IDE2).

turn on your PC and pres delete to go to the bios settings,

once there go to the basic cmos settings page, and make sure you see the settings there as you wanted,
Primary master first hard drive
Primary Slave second hard drive

Secondary Master your cd\dvd drive

How to detect the hardrive?


Hi,

setup the first drive as slave ( sometimes No Jumper ) then the furthest away drive as Master.
If this fails, and you have 2 IDE Slots on the motherboard. ( Primary/Secondary ) Put 1 drive on primary as Slave. And DVD Rom As Master ( same Cable ) Then put second drive On Secondary IDE Slot. ( Set As Master Or Slave )
If none of these solutions Work For you, check to see if Both Channels are activated in the Bios.

Hard Drive Installation


Hi emceedrive, I gather you are using ATA/PATA IDE hard disk drives? Each hard disk drive has a large white sticker on it. Listed there are pin settings to set the IDE to Master or slave & Master with a slave. (We want to leave you're drive with windows on it alone). Not changing its jumper or not adding a jumper for now. We are not hooking up you're second drive just yet either.
Oh, please you're not an idiot either.
Unplug the power cable from the PC & open you're case.
Please open you're ASUS P4P800 SE manual to section 2.2.3 Motherboard layout. We want to connect the data cable to SEC_IDE1 first because once PRI_IDE1 is connected you will not be able to connect SEC_IDE1's data cable up to the DVD drive bay.
So grab a data cable for you DVD drive. It may have three connectors on it. Plug the connector that is the furthest from the other 2 connectors on the cable into the motherboard slot named SEC_IDE2. The data cable only goes in one way. Run the remainder of the cable up to the DVD player but do not connect it to the player yet. It is ok to fold the data cable which will help in routing it upwards to the DVD bay. Than connect the data cable to you're primary master IDE drive. (The one with windows already installed on it). The data cable should look just like the DVD data cable. Again you want to connect the furthest connector on the data cable into the MB slot named PRI_IDE1.
For now it’s best not to install the drive into the drive bay. Stand it up next to your case or lay it down flat with a sheet of paper under it. Connect the power cable to the drive. Plug in the PC's power cord & power up the PC & start pressing the delete key every two seconds until the bios main menu loads. You should see the Primary Hard disk drive listed at the main menu. Now go to the title Boot in the bios. Open boot order. The boot order of the devices should be as follows.
Boot device 1. (Floppy Disk Drive)
Boot device 2. (DVD Disk Drive) [None shown it’s not connected to the system].
Boot device 3. (Model number of your Primary IDE Master HDD).
Once this is set, save the bios & exit. The system should auto restart & windows should load. Let windows finish loading. Than shut down windows normally.
Unplug the PC's power cord. Since you had to remove a DVD drive you'll need to set the remaining DVD player's jumper on the drive to a Master & connect the data cable & power cord to it. (You may have to remove the DVD to see where the Master pins are located. It will be marked on the DVD player near the pins).
Now take you're new drive, do not insert it into the drive bay. Look at you're Master drive's white label. Set the jumper on the master drive first. It should be set as a Master drive with a slave.
Connect a jumper for this.
Go to you're new drive. Again look at its white label. Set this drive's jumper as a Slave drive. The Master drive should be connected to the end of the data cable. The new slave drive should be connected to the next in line connector.
Once all data cables & power cables are connected plug in the PC's power cord & boot the system, again pressing the delete key every two seconds until the boot main menu loads. Now you should see the Primary IDE Master drive & you're new Primary IDE Slave drive listed. You should also see the DVD as the Secondary IDE Master. Go to the title "Boot" again. Set the boot order as mentioned above. Save & exit the bios. Windows should load as it did before. Once windows has finished loading open windows Explorer & see if you're new slave drive is listed.
Shut down the system & unplug the power cord. Unplug the slave drive & mount it into its drive bay. Take a black marker & mark the side of the drive as slave. Disconnect the Master drive & connect it into its drive bay. Reconnect the data cables & power cables. Check all connectors before closing the case up. Re-connect the PC's power cord & boot the system. Everything should be fine. If you have a problem getting the data cable connected to the slave drive because its closer to the DVD drive as opposed to the Primary IDE Master drive you can make the slave drive a Secondary IDE Master (Change its jumper setting according to the drive’s label for Master with a slave) & connect the DVD player as a Secondary IDE Slave. (Change its jumper to slave). Change the Primary IDE Master drive’s jumper as a Master with no slave, single drive. That all.

Bios settings


at bios settings choose auto detect for secondary master and secondary slave.

one burner must be master and the other one is slave jumper settings. all burners must be place at secondary drives.

Dvd rom won't work


You forgot to check the jumper settings of the Hard Disk and the DVD Drive found at the back near the IDE and power cables. If you are using one IDE cable, then one jumper should be a Master, that's the Harddisk, and the DVD drive a Slave. If you are using two IDE cable then both must be Master.

You should check also the Harddisk jumper help settings printed on them, some harddisk needs the jumper settings for Slave presence on the same IDE cable.

If it doesn't work then It's either the cable or the DVD drive has a problem.
