Question about HP PL4260N 42 in. Plasma HDTV

10 Answers

No picture, audio OK, HP PL4260N, outside HP's repair for common Problem. According to HP and your site the Y sustain board needs replacing, problem supposedly is plasma mal discharge. My two-year-old HP PL4260N went blank, too. I called and e-mailed and pestered and HP offered no help. The best they will do is offer to TRY to fix it for $630. Even if they can't fix it, they keep $300! What a way to run a company, huh?

I've tried that. I've also called HP again and they've refused to extend the warranty or do anything at all unless I pay $639.

  • dan6491 Feb 20, 2009

That's way too risky for me. I once fried some RAM in a computer and I've been afraid to go inside anything electronic ever since. Thanks anyway.

Isn't there some way to persuade HP to fix it?

Just constantly call and email HP everyday until you get a deal where you can send it in and only get charged if it gets fixed, otherwise go to a local repair service. Big companies like that are hard to persuade. Talk to managers, ask to be directed to whoever is up there in the company. Write reviews about HP, write to the BBB about them. Something may eventually work, but if it is outside of warranty, they don't need to do anything for free.

There is no way to persuade HP to fix anything I use to work for them. They run a tight ship if you know what I mean. You should ALWAYS buy extended warranty's on expensive electronics they are worth it spite what some people say.
Second, all you need is an anti static wristband you can buy one for a few dollars from any computer repair place that sells products as well, or online. Wear it and you can work on anything without being worried about frying delicate components.
The Y board is what, more than likely needs replacing. So you have two choices buy a new board replace it yourself and hope for the best.. The board when you find one will still be 100-300 dollars.
Or you can just **** it up and buy a new TV WITH extended warranty.

All the best, hope it works out.

I had the same problem and HP has been very helpful, try calling this number 877-917-4380 ext. 79 and be firm tell them this needs to be fixed. They are sending my second replacement part and said they will keep sending parts till it works, this tv is almost 3 years old.

After a 7 month long battle with HP arguing back and forth about
their product... I found a website that suggested writing their CEO. I
wrote a constructive letter in reference to my issue, and how it
appears to have been a big scam... WHALA! HP sends me an email 3 days
later with a Senior case rep number:
    877-917-4380 ext. 79 I
explained the issue, and they took care of it promptly!! HP mailed out
my YSUS, and scheduled the repair person...however, HP did swear to it
that my problem was not the same as the "Free Fix" offer and I was on
my own if the YSUS didn't fix it.... The random repair guy showed up
some 4 days later.... took 10 minutes to put the new board in and the
    issue was fixed!!!.

Call the number, sate your case, be firm
that its their issue and not your responsibility to fix... hell even
throw in the fact there are countless numbers of people with the same
issue that have been getting theirs fixed for free..... YOU WIN!!!

Yes i think you have to replace the Y scan board... the bad part is that this
is a common problem with the HPL4260 model TVs and HP knows it. However
they will refuse to fix this issue if your TV does not fall with in
their serial range of those they claim have faulty parts. I called HP,
and the hardware Tech admitted that HP used some cheap sub standard
parts in ALL of the models shipped HPL4260... not just the ones in the
serial range they (HP) claim... this was yesterday (03 December 2008).
However since HP no longer even carries the parts you have to buy them
yourself... you can find the parts here: http://www.ued.net/website/index.html

    you will need to buy:
TNPA3243AB-PA and TNPA3242-PA the Upper and Lower data output scan
boards.... aka Y scan... that is according the the HP Tech I spoke to...

If you can do the repair or no someone who can, you can get the part on ebay for around 150. That is far from thr $630 they want. Just do a search PL4260N and you will find your part. Good luck

Hi there!

I know how disappointed you are, but that's how business is going, business is going around circles. The HP is offering their best service, because they know how to do it right, its generic if we can say.
Anyhow, I suggest, if you want to try to get it fixed, you need to invest $630, right? and you are not sure if they can fixed it for $300, right? well, if its going to worth saving with your plasma, it is worth trying, but if you can afford to buy a new one. It would better for you, a brand new plasma tv! looks good, sounds good.

good luck man! cheers!

The problem here is you cannot even find that---I suggest you either buy the y sustain board as only circuit boards are sold and NO parts themselves or take it to a shop for an estimate.

I replaced the module on YSUS board and replaced the FS2 fuse on hp cptoh-0602 plazma tv. TV worked great for about 2 hrs of usage time. however, while i was changing the channal few days later since...

Usually, when you replace Y-sustain board, for older plasma, they suggest to replace both Ydrive board (up and low). And sometimes, Z-sustaint.

Im not sure your are an expertise in this matter so be very careful when you open a TV because hasardous voltages can kill you in the worst escenario.

If you are not, don't work on your TV. It will be your sole responsibility.

Check ships on Y drive board (both board are installed on the right side of Y-sustain. They have square black ships that used to get bad. If they don't have aluminum cooler on them, you can see if they are burned or have holes on them. Old plasmas use to have issues with those boards. Before you installed the Y Sustain you should check Ydrive boards. Maybe you damage the Y Sustain because the Y drives weren't good.

Try to replace the fuse, disconnect the Ydrive from Y Sustain, turn on TV and check for voltages on Y sustain (panel has a sticker with each voltage). Hope you didn't damage Y sustain and can find Ydrive board to fix your TV.

And REMEMBER, you can kill yourself when you work on TVs.

Picture went black but you could still hear the movie

Hi- My PL4260N stopped working after about three years, the audio worked but no video at all. The TV worked fine until one day...no more picture.
I found out that the YSUS and ZSUS boards in the TC fail alot...BUT you can get new or repaired ones off of EBAY...
First check for failed components (burned, loose, bulging, etc.) if nothing obvious is failed then check the fuses on the YSUS, ZSUS, and power supply boards...usually if a board has a blown fuse the board needs to be replaced...get the part number and search it in Google and eBay and you will find options for replace/repair.
Mine had a blown fuse on the YSUS board...I got it fixed for $75 through coppell TV (they are on Ebay)....
Now my TV works fine again!
Good luck.

HP 42" Plasma

I do not have a manual, but HP just replaced my Y Sustain board on my PL4260N (Model (ED429AA).
HP replaced it free because of a known problem with something they call "Plasma Mal-Discharge'.
The part number on the work order is 1032298-HS.

This did not fix my pixilation lines across the top.
I have been told that my Y-DRV is probably bad, but I need to pay for that replacement.
But, they did not verify that it is bad and did not guarantee this is what is wrong.
