I have one jbl gt5-10 subwoofer 1100 watts i want to know the best kind and size amp to get for them

You could get a 1100 watt amp, but, it is ALWAYS good to get a smaller amp than the max rating so you have a "safe" zone and turn it up all the way so you don't have to worry about always running it at its peak( which sounds better but more chance of blowing it)

    plus i would highly recommend rockford fosgate. these amps are very trustworthy.
    i have been running one with my 2 10'' for years

Gt5 12 inch 275 watts how many watts of amp best?


Depends on what output your stereo is. If you underrate the speakers (speaker watts is less than stereo output), the unit will sound louder for a while, then you end up blowing your speakers with the excess distortion. If you overrate the speakers (speaker watts is higher than stereo output) the speaker will not operate correctly and the distortion can damage it also. Its best to get a close match. Slightly higher is better. It is important you know actual wattage output not PMPO ( Peak music power output) A lot of stereos are rated at PMPO. The higher number sounds great but in reality, the figure is the MAX output and by then the sound is distorting badly. Distortion ruins more speakers than anything else...

Make sure it's a RMS 1200 wats not MAX watts also the Ohms of this speakers and them you can buy any amp. with the same RMS watts of your speaker and same Ohms of resistance.

you need to replace the output amp as well as the resistors you mentioned. go to rad shack and get a resistor color code guide as well as power supply troubleshooting book soldering Iron, Its best to have a pro do it>

Finding the best amplifier


Hello sharky75,

That 1600 watt peak power figure for your subwoofer can't tell you what amp you need. You need to know the maximum RMS power the sub can handle. And you need to know the impedance (ohms) of the voice coil(s). JBL GT5 series subs have an RMS rating of 275 watts. The GTO series handles 300 watts. The Power series handles 400 watts. The GTi series handles 700 watts. Some are single voice coil, so the impedance is fixed. Others are dual voice coil allowing you to wire them for different impedance loads.

For maximum performance your amp should be able to provide at or near the same number of watts RMS into the lowest impedance at which the sub can be configured. For example, if your sub is the Power Series Model number P1224, it has dual 4ohm voice coils and can be wired to present either a 2ohm load (parallel) or an 8ohm load (series). You want to wire the voice coils in parallel for the 2ohm load and select an amp that outputs up to 400 watts RMS into 2ohms. The Orion Cobalt CO8001 is just such an amp. If you have one of the GTi Series subs, a better amp would be the JVC Arsenal KS-AR75 which outputs 700 watts into 2ohms.
