THE ANSWER TO MY QUESTION WAS FOUND OUT BY MYSELF BY VISITING A REPAIR / SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND MAKING ENQUIRIES CONCERNING THE DC OUTPUT OF THE AC ADAPTER ASSOCIATED WITH THE WESTERN DIGITAL, MY BOOK 250GB USB. tHE VOLTAGES ARE THESE. : - AC INPUT = 100 - 240 VOLTS 50/60 HZ
DC OUTPUT = 12 VOLTS ( REGULATED ) 2 - 0 A
CENTER PIN OF 12 VOLT DC INPUT PLUG IS " POSITIVE "

THANK YOU FOR THE SPACE TO ASK MY QUESTION.

If the output voltage (from the mains to the AC Adaptor for your 'My Book') is too weak - your 'MY BOOK' will not operate - If it is too high - your 'MY BOOK' will fry.

Believe it or not, unplug the AC adapter (Power Adapter) from the surge protector, and plug it directly into the wall socket.
Try this first.

1) I believe the power adapter is rated at 12 Volts DC, and 2 Amps, for the output voltage, and amperage.
(12 Volts times 2 Amps = 24 Watts.
12V X 2A = 24W)

Use a multimeter, and test the voltage coming out.
You can buy an economical multimeter for around $8 to $12. A lot of stores carry them. An auto parts store is but one place.

The plug end that plugs into the laptop, is cylindrical in shape, and has a hole in the center.

This is DC voltage you are testing.
The metal center of the plug is Positive. The outside shield surrounding the plug is Negative.

The Function Knob should be turned to DC Voltage.
(If it is a symbol, it will be a dotted line above a solid line.
NOT a curved line on a dotted line. This is for AC voltage)

If there is more than one scale, set the Function Knob to DC voltage 0-50 Volts.

The Red probe lead of the multimeter is the Positive lead.
The Black probe lead of the multimeter is the Negative lead.

AC adapter plugged into power, the Positive probe lead is inserted into the center of the plug.
Be SURE it doesn't touch the outside metal shell at any time.

The Negative probe lead is touched to the outside metal shell.

See if the voltage reads 12 Volts.

AC adapter (Power Adapter) checks out OK?
Suggest there is a problem with the small circuit board inside the MyBook.

Inside the MyBook WD500H1U-00 is an ordinary harddrive.
It is a desktop sized harddrive. 3.5 inches across in width.
(3 and a half inches, or 8.9cm)

It is a SATA harddrive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FlySnyJ0CQ

Inside that plastic MyBook case is also a small circuit board. An interface circuit board.

The harddrive plugs into the interface circuit board directly, or there is a cable, or cables, that plug into the harddrive from the interface circuit board.

It is this interface circuit board that goes bad most of the time.

You can remove the harddrive out of the MyBook case, and put it inside a desktop computer that uses SATA harddrives, as a Slave drive.
Retrieve your information, and burn to disk/s, or flash drive/s.

{DO NOT move any jumpers on the back of a SATA harddrive. These are for the factory ONLY}

Or you can buy an adapter that the harddrive plugs into, and it has a USB cable.

Or you can put it into a 3.5 SATA external enclosure, and use it as an external harddrive again.

I don't have a photo of the AC adapter, but if you look on it the Voltage and Amperage specifications are;

Input: 100-240VAC / 50~60Hz
Output: 12VDC / 2A

This means the Input power can be from 100 volts to 240 Volts AC, and at 50 to 60 Hertz

The Output power is 12 Volts DC at no more than 2 Amp's. (Amperes)

Asian Power Devices Inc. has a model DA-24B12 that fits these specs.
Also a Wattac AC adapter model number - BAO362Zl-8-A01 will work.

Otherwise just use a 12 Volt, 2 Amp power pack, with a positive on center contact, and a 2mm pin hole

I have several computers at home, and none og them can recognize this portable device. Hitachi 250 GB Mod: SDM/250RW

1) Power:

It may be the problem that occurs with a lot of USB powered devices jrherrer. Not enough power provided.

The USB cable plugged into the computer, provides signal wires for transferring information back, and forth, and also provides 5 Volts DC for power. (Two D cell flashlight batteries produce 3 Volts DC)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB

[ Below shows the Signal pins, and the Voltage pins of the USB B Mini style connector, (Male), used to connect to the SimpleDrive Mini external harddrive,

Pin 1 is for the 5 Volts DC Positive (Wire color - Red)
Pin 2 is for the D- Signal (Wire color - White)
Pin 3 is for the D+ Signal (Wire color - Green)
Pin 4 is not connected. (Or sometimes joined to Pin 5 with a Resistor)
Pin 5 is for the Ground (Wire color - Black)

Just added info in case you wanted to know ]

From what I see the SDM/250RW has a USB port on the side, and a DC Power Jack, used for an AC adapter, also.
(Round port with a pin in the center)

From what I see stated from Hitachi, and sellers on the 'net, the AC adapter may not be provided.
Many of those who provide a review state that both the USB cable, and the AC adapter is needed to provide enough power. Seems to be a power hungry external harddrive

It's a 2.5 Hitachi SATA laptop harddrive inside that external case. (The Harddrive is 2 and a half inches across in Width. Common size used for laptops)

When using an external device powered by a USB cable there are general guidelines to follow,
A) The USB cable should not be more than 2 feet in length
B) Connect the device directly to your computer, instead of through a hub, or other device, unless the USB hub has it's own power.

2) USB cable:

Could be a faulty USB cable, although I imagine you have tried different ones by now.

3) Interface Circuit Board:

The Hitachi SATA 2.5 harddrive inside the SImpleDrive Mini SDM/250RW, plugs into a small circuit board located inside that external case.

Components on the circuit board may be fried, or the Harddrive may have come loose from the interface.

Loose from the interface
To explain;
The back of the harddrive has connector pins sticking out.
The interface has socket holes which the pins insert into.

Faulty circuit board
The external case of the SimpleDrive Mini SDM/250RW can be carefully opened up, and the Hitachi SATA 2.5 harddrive extracted out.

Another inexpensive external case for a 2.5 SATA harddrive can be procured, and the Hitachi harddrive put in it.

Example of a 2.5 SATA external enclosure,

Dear Sir/ Madam, I have TWO Western Digital USB

first of all , you are looking at the wrong voltages. The important voltage is the DC OUTPUT, which is the voltage the external harddrives use AND the polarity of the plug attached to the harddrive end of the cable.
if both the harddrives have say 12v dc output and both have the insignia of the center conductor being + (posative) then you can interchange them. and you CAN run a 9volt unit with 12volt DC power, but not the other way around.
Look at your power adaptors again for the OUTPUT and polarity.
should be a half-circle with lines depicting the polarity(+,-) of the center and sheild connections to the hard drives printed on both the harddrives and the power adaptors . This can also be tested with a dc volt meter while the adaptors are plugged into the wall.
DO NOT try to test the AC end while plugged in!!

Is the secondary voltage required for a WD external storage book wdh1u5000n 12 volts DC?

There is no absolute answer to this, it depends on the USB ports of the computer. Normally on a dekstop it might not be required, on most laptops it would be.
But ... if there are ports available, I'd use them both all the time, reduce the risk of power problems.
