Excel 2007 Home Office and Student - When I try to put the curser in a cell to highlight the cell, 4 cells light up - I cannot highlight only 1 cell at a time. It's like it's stuck on a 4-cell-at-a-time curser point. Have you ever seen this?

  • kathysiess Feb 18, 2009

I tried to hold Ctrl and clicked the cell and it put the curser in the 1st cell, but the 3 former other cells are highlighted with a light blue shading as if they were also being populated.

  • kathysiess Feb 18, 2009

Nope. I'm trying to change the color of a single cell and I changes the color of the other 4 adjacent cells - it will not let me change the color for a single cell.

  • kathysiess Feb 18, 2009

How do I reinstall Excel if I purchased it and installed it online?

  • kathysiess Feb 18, 2009

I'm trying to highlight cell 19-E in a spreadsheet, and when I click the cell, 19E through 23E are shaded.

  • kathysiess Feb 18, 2009

Nope - didn't fix it. I'm using a laptop touch pad, and it seems to be misreading my pressure of my click. If I keep barely touching the single cell (like 20 times), eventually it will finally just click into that single cell. Somethings not right. I was away from the computer for 5 days and left several documents open and my email account open. Could this be an issue a hard boot would resolve?

  • kathysiess Feb 18, 2009

Nope, F8 didn't fix the problem.

    Hello there.

I understand that in Ms Excel 2007 when you try to highlight one cell , 4 cells are highlighted.

You may do the following troubleshooting steps.

1)This could be a problem with the software codes( that is called bugs in the software). Updating office files may solve the issue.
For updating please go through this website.

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downlo...

Click on the above link or copy and paste it in a address bar of a web browser.

    2) If the above steps do not solve the issue. You can uninstall and reinstall the Microsoft Office. to do this follow below steps.
    a) For uninstalling go to control panel and add remove programs. click on office and uninstall it.
    b) for reinstalling use the CD or DVD which you got. or use recovery partition to reinstall.

Thank you for giving me this wonderful opportunity to assist you. For any further clarifications please comment.

Have you tried working on a entirely new worksheet????...to me it doesn't seem to be an issue with Excel it seems to be the delayed response of the touch pad please try an entirely new worksheet and respond.

There is a known issue since excel 2003 also referred to as Ghosting, however in version 2007 it seems to have turned into an annoying bug that Microsoft does not have a final solution for yet.
Clicking near the top of the cells seems to select the single cell. Clicking towards the bottom of the cell triggers the "bug".
Reinstallation may or may not solve your problem since this is a bug in the way excel works. Give it a go, but if it does not work there are numerous workarounds. Such as:

1. Try tapping the wheel of scroll mouse, if applicable.
2. Try changing the page view from Page Layout to any other View option: View tab > Normal
3. Close the spreadsheet, open again and see if behavior still exists.
4. Close Excel, open the spreadsheet and see if behavior still exists.
5. If cell still selects multiple cells, up keyboard up/down/left/right arrows to navigate away and then back to cell, then click in the formula bar to edit (aka in the formula bar you see C1:C4, click on C1 it should auto jump you to that one cell only)
6. If it says EXT or Extend Selection in the bottom left corner of Excel, then it is in Extended mode - try tapping the F8 key once
7. Try zooming out then clicking the cell selection again: View tab > Zoom > Edit % in Custom field > Click OK

Hope one of those helps.

You probably have EXTEND turned on. Try ths. Select a cell and hit the F8 key. Now try to select a cell 3 rows away from the originally selected cell. If EXTEND is on, then the selection will now select all cells in that range. Now hit the F8 key again. This should turn it off. Try it out and let me know. Either way, if you hit the F8 key twice, it should turn EXTEND off.

Where did you download Excel from? Did you download the installer? If you did, did you save the installer first, then install? You can try and reinstall the program, but that may or maynot fix your problem. If you don't have the installer, go back to where you downloaded if from and see if you can re-download it. I think it's a glitch, I have Excel 07 and I'm happy with it.

Try this. Plug in a USB mouse. Do you have the same problem selecting cells? If not, then I would highly suspect your touchpad.

Hi Kathy, Did you try my suggestion of plugging in a usb mouse to see if it worked the same or not? That way you can rule out the touchpad consideration. Let me know.

Iv'e found an answer to this as I was having this trouble on a user's PC that I was supporting at work. Below is the fix.

Click on the Circle (top left "Ribbon")
Click Excel Options bottom of the window
Click Advanced
And scroll to the bottom.
Uncheck under Lotus Compatibility -> Transition navigation keys
I checked it and it wouldn't let me use CTRL + SHIFT + Down or Up arrows. Then unchecked it and it works fine now.

Nge@hotmail.comI have a product key for the 2007 Office Home and Student but can't find the disk. Where can I download the suite and just put in the product key I already have?

You can download the software free from CNET.COM but you will need to use your own valid product key to activate it.

Here is the direct link to their download page:

http://download.cnet.com/Microsoft-Office-Home-amp-Student/3000-18483_4-10704798.html?tag=mncol;5

Just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the information at the website indicated.

Then just click on the DOWNLOAD NOW (298 MB) button on the left side of the CNET download page when you get there.

Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the software, and make sure you click on the yellow security bar at the top of your browser screen if necessary to allow the download to proceed.

Good luck.

Microsoft Excel tips

Auto sum shortcut key
Quickly create a Microsoft Excel formula to get the sum of all cells by highlighting the cells you wish to know the value of and pressing ALT and = .
Create hyper links in Excel
Quickly create hyper links in your Microsoft Word, Excel, or Front Page document by highlighting text and pressing "CTRL + K".
Close all open files at once
Close all open Microsoft Word and/or Excel files by holding down the shift key and clicking "File" and then "Close All".
Quickly open recently opened files
Quickly open the recent files by first pressing "ALT + F" to open the file Menu and press 1, 2, 3, or 4.
Create underlines without any text
This tip works with the majority of Microsoft Office applications. Easily create an underlined space by pressing CTRL + U to start the underline, then press SHIFT + Space for each underlined space you wish to create. An example of how this could be used is for printable forms, for example: Name: .
Print only sections of a document
Save on your printer ink by selectively printing in Windows programs such as Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, WordPad, Outlook, etc. To do this highlight portions of text you wish to print and click print. In the printer dialog window under Page Range choose the option Selection. It is important to realize that not all programs or printer drivers support this feature.
Repeat recent action
Using the F4 key in Microsoft Office 2000 and above allows the user to repeat the last used action. For example, if you have changed the font of a selected text and wish to change another portion of text to the same font, pressing F4 will do this for you automatically.
Quickly undo
Quickly undo mistakes in the majority of most PC Windows program by pressing CTRL + Z.
Quickly above cell contents
In Microsoft Excel press CTRL + SHIFT + " to copy the above cells contents.
Using the Microsoft Excel Auto filter
Organize cells quickly by using Microsoft Auto filter. Columns that contains long listing of data can be easily sorted by using the Auto filter option, to use this option select the top rows of the columns you want to be used and select Data / Filter and Auto Filter. Once successfully completed you can use drop down arrows to filter the data automatically.

MS Office Home and Student 2007 keeps locking

I have found that Microsoft's best was the 2003 version of everything, so I might try installing that, but if you need 2007 for some reason I am willing to upload my personal version of 2007 Professional and provide my serial. If you need I can also provide the 2003 version, but there are just a few major bigs in the 2007 version, I would see if you can update it in any way.

Microsoft office home and student 2007 25 digit key

Hello,

When you buy a new computer, quite frequently it will come with a trial version of MS Office installed. To get the 25-digit product key, you would need to buy the full version from microsoft.com or in any software store.

As a free alternative: OpenOffice is a free application which is 100% compatible with all MS Office applications. You can download this for free from www.openoffice.org.

Thanks for using the FixYa forums!

Cannot insert columns in excel spreadsheet. Comes up with error cannot shift object off sheet

This error message occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The option Nothing (hide objects) is selected in the Display options for this workbook section in the Excel Options dialog box.
  • You create an object, such as a cell comment, in any cell in a column.
  • You try to hide the column to the left of the column that contains the object, the column that contains the object, or all the columns to the right side of the column that contains the object. Or, in some cases, you try to insert a row or column in the worksheet.
There are two ways to fix this problem.
Method 1:  Temporarily toggle the option from "Nothing (hide objects)" to All In Excel 2007, temporarily toggle the option from Nothing (hide objects) to All, and then insert the rows or columns as needed. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In the upper-left corner of the Excel window, click the Microsoft Office button.
  2. At the bottom of the menu, click Excel Options.
  3. Click Advanced from list of options on the left.
  4. Scroll down to the Display options for this workbook section, and then click All under For objects, show:, and then click OK.
Notes To use the keyboard shortcut to toggle this selection, press CTRL+6.
If these steps do not let you hide rows or columns or insert rows or columns in Excel 2007, try the steps in method 2.
Method 2: Change the position property of the object to Move and size with cells To work around this issue, Excel 2003, Excel 2002, and Excel 2000, change the position property of the object to Move and size with cells. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. If the object is a cell comment, select the cell that contains the comment, right-click the cell, and then click Show Comment or Show/Hide Comments. Note This makes the comment visible.
  2. Move the pointer to the edge of the object until the pointer changes into a white arrow with four small black arrows on the pointer. Then, click the object to select it.
  3. In Excel 2003 and earlier version of Excel, click <object name> on the Format menu. Note In this menu command, <object name> is the name of the object, such as "Comment" or "AutoShape."  In Excel 2007, click Format <object name>.
  4. In the Format dialog box, click the Properties tab.
  5. Click Move and size with cells, and then click OK.
  6. If you want to hide the cell comment again, right-click the cell that contains the comment, and then click Hide Comment.
  7. Follow these steps for each object in the affected column as described in the "Cause" section. When you hide the columns, you do not receive the error message.
