Hi,
reboot the system and at the manufacturer logo keep taping
F8 key, when it let you go to a menu you'll see the option safe mode, select that and press enter, now see if the sound is working or not,

if it is that means you most likely have a driver issue and reinstall the drivers,

further queries are welcome

I am having problems adjusting volume

What type of laptop HP , ASUS , COMPAQ , ACER ?..........
Up the Volume on My HP Laptop
Open the "Start" menu and click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Locate and open the icon that deals with sound.
Depending on your version of Windows, it will say either "Sounds and Audio Devices" or "Adjust System Volume."
Adjust the volume under the "Speakers" icon.
To do this, click on the slider bar and move it up on the slider.
If you need to decrease the volume, simply move the slider bar down.
Click on "OK" when finished and close the "Control Panel" window.
Click on the speaker icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen for a faster volume adjustment. Simply move the slider bar up to increase the volume and move it back down to decrease the volume.

Volume on an Acer Laptop
Acer laptops are typically sold with pre-installed Windows operating systems that offer sound-adjustment features for increasing the volume on the laptop's built-in stereo speakers.
These same functions can also be used in tandem with external speakers or headphones to increase the volume, as well as mute all sound on the laptop.
If the computer should output an unusually low volume, fixing the problem may be no more involved than sliding a control switch with the computer mouse. Click once on the speaker icon in the taskbar on the lower-right corner to open a rectangular window with a slide control.
Click and hold the left mouse button on the slide control to drag it upward, increasing the volume to the laptop's maximum setting.
Click the "Mixer" button below the slider control to open another window with volume controls for "Speakers" and "Applications," adjusting each slide control upward to increase the volume.
Be sure the speaker icon below each control is not accidentally muted.
Click once on each speaker icon to remove the red circle with a slash through it, which will restore audio.
Click the Microsoft flag or "Start" button in the lower-left corner if the shortcut speaker icon is missing from the taskbar.
Click "Control Panel" to select "Adjust Sounds" from the Hardware and Sounds category.

MAJIC JACK VOLUME IS TOO LOW.

Look into the Majic Jack software for volume controls. You could try increasing the volume controls that are in Windows.

Click Start/Control Panel or Start/Settings/Control Panel and look for Audio or Sound. Open it and increase the volume.

You can also get to the Audio or Sound by clicking the megaphone at the bottom right near the time and adjust the volume.

No sound output device is installed

Check your Volume and make sure you do not have it on mute. If you installed the drivers then the volume must be muted. Right Click on the megaphone at the bottom right near the time and open the volume controls. Make sure there is nothing muted.

You can also get to the sound and audio volume controls by clicking Start/Control Panel and look for Audio or Sound.

Sound is not working

There are some possible reasons why the sound is not working. It could be the volume control is in "MUTE", or the right sound card is not selected in the volume properties, or the speaker is defective.

Here's what you need to do:

1. Try to connect an external 2-channeled PC speaker. The computer should recognize the speaker and the sound should be transferred to the PC speaker. If the sound works on the PC external speaker, then you know that the volume control is NOT in mute and the sound card is selected. It means also that the built-in speakers could be defective.

2. If the same problem occur after connecting an external PC speaker, check the volume control, and make sure that the "MUTE" box is not checked. Then adjust the master volume.

* If everything's properly configured, but there's still no sound, check the volume properties under the Control Panel. Be sure that the correct sound card driver is selected. If that did not help, try to re-install the sound card driver.

* And the last option, contact the manufacturer and have them fix it for you.

Thank you and good luck!

My battery will not recharge and the volume does not work

Battery:
Portable batteries are consumable and have a expected lifespan of roughly 300 to 500 recharge/discharge cycles before replacement is required. If you are using the original battery, then most likely you need a new one. If battery is a new replacement and you have the same issue, flash the BIOS to most current, see if any change. If not change, and a new battery doesn't charge, then replace the motherboard.
Volume:
You were not clear if this is a NO SOUND or just VOLUME IS LOW issue. For NO SOUND
  1. Open Volume Control, Ensure that sound is not muted.
  2. Control Panel, Sound and Volume controls. Ensure that the sound card is selected as the primary playback device.
  3. BIOS, ensure the Audio is Enabled.
  4. Download and reinstall the audio driver.
If you are just talking about the volume control displaying on screen, reinstall the quickset utility

Volume

you might want to look into one of two options... either an external sound card, or a keyboard that has mltimedia buttons on it.

If you go with the former, the Audigy 2 NX external sound card might be want you are looking for. It's small and has volume controls right on the top. Granted, it is overkill if you just want simple volume control. However, if you don't have a high-end sound card already, it could be a nice addition to your desk..?

Sound only works while testing and is usually low. DVDs or any sound from the internet do not work. This problem has been there for a long time and its really irritating me. Thank god i found this site....

I will assume you have windows xp, since you did not state with OS you are using. Is the sound turned up on the volume control? On the volume control make sure both the wave and master volume are correctly set.

If you do not know how to open the volume control, goto start, then click run, not type "sndvol32".

If this is not the case then you are having driver issues with your sound card. Make sure the sound drivers are installed and configured.

First check the volume control then check the drivers.
