The first thing that you need to do is verify how you are connected. I could better troubleshoot your problem if I knew that so for now I can just give general advice. #1, What do you have connected to the unit?, are we dealing with coax cable? Antenna? or cable box/satellite box. If you have all except cable box, the cc function will be controlled by your sharp remote and if you press the cc button a number of times, you can turn it off. Everytime you press that button, it changes (ex. 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, and OFF..which is what you want). You can press the DISPLAY button on your sharp remote to check the status of you cc. However if you do have a satellite/cable box, your cc is NOT being controlled by the tv, but is being controlled by your cable/satellite reciever and the settings need to be adjusted there. I recommend contacting your cable/satellite provider for assistance with turning it off within the cable/satellite box settigs. #2 There is a place on the web where you can find a manual for free that even sharp wont tell you about...at http://www.sharp.ca/manuals/ . This is their canada website and the same manuals that are for the us models are here, it is all the same literature. hope i resolved your issue

Cannot get rid of sub titles on the TV the button that should remove them does not do anything

Subtitles are embedded in the program material. You may be seeing closed captioning (CC) which usually is enabled/disabled as part of initial set up.

Why can't I get rid of subtitles?

You will find that closed captioning (CC) was enabled during initial set up. Go back to that procedure and disable CC. Subtitles are embedded in program material which is something else.

Don't know how to activate closed caption, and cannot find instructions

What is the TV source? For some sources (set top box), you may need to turn on the captions using the menus of the box.

Assuming you are using a source that gives captions that the TV can interpret, if you have the Proscan 26LA30Q remote, press the CC button to toggle through the caption options. Another route is to press Menu (either on the remote or the buttons on the side of the TV) then select the Feature submenu with the left/right arrows. Press Enter (menu when you use the buttons on the TV) then navigate to the Digital Closed Captions option. Here you can set the captions to on and adjust the size, style and color of the captions when they appear on-screen.

If you are using a universal remote, try the CC button. If it doesn't work, try another code for the Proscan TV on the remote. There are some codes that may not control all of the functions of the TV with the remote.

Crutchfield has the manual for the TV on the product site: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Kaec3gBqVtM/p_68326LA30Q/Proscan-26LA30Q.html . The direct link is http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchfield.com/Manuals/683/68326LA30Q.PDF .

I hope this helps

THERE IS A BLOCK BOX IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN ON ONE CHANNEL

This is a text box. To get rid of it you press the cc button. You may have to press the cc button more than once or twice in a row. There is no harm in pressing the cc button. In fact turn to that channel and press it a few times in a row while looking at your screen. You will notice that you will see cc:1/2 cc:2/2 cc:text3/4 cc:text4/4 and cc:off
or something like that. When it says cc:off you will no longer see the block box on this channel or any other channel. You do not have to do this for every channel once it is done.

However the text box might be set on the caption setting in the cable box or satellite tv box. If so the procedure is different.

Cannot turn CC ON/OFF via remotes

Try this combination.

1) Start with the cable box turned on and TV on tuned to the cable box.

2) Press the POWER button for the cable box and then quickly press the MENU button.

3) This should bring up the user setting menu. Use the arrow keys on remote to go to Closed Caption and press right arrow button this should bring up the closed caption menu.

4) Press the OK button and this should either turn CC on or off.

5) Once Closed Caption is turned off press LEFT ARROW button to return to User Settings Menu.

6) Press the POWER button to turn the Cable box back on and the Closed Caption should be gone....

Good Luck.....

I am getting a black square in the upper left corner. How do I get rid of it?

Press CC button on the remote control until you see CC/TT OFF.
Closed Captioning or TeleText is the cause of the problem.

Have a KDL-52BR4, cant get rid of closed caption on the screen even after pushing cc button on remote

If you are using a Cable Box, make sure that CC is off. Same applies to a satellite receiver. If you don't have either of those then I would contact your service center to have it looked at. The micro is the only thing that can cause that, providing your sure about how to turn the closed caption off in the menu. Try that way first, instead of using the CC on the remote.

Closed caption wont turn off

I have a Vizio VX37L that i purchased on 12/26/08 and I had the same problem by 1/4/09. My five year old son loves to futz around with buttons and switches and he somehow enabled closed captions from the front of my Motorola digital cable box (I had it hooked up to the Vizio via HDMI 1.)
What you need to do is turn off your cable box and leave the Vizio on. Hit the "Menu" button on the front of the cable box and that should bring up a setup screen on your TV. Using the down cursor button on the front of the cable box, go down to the "Close Caption" section on the setup screen. It probably says "Enabled." Click on the right cursor button to disable CC and you should be good to go.
