HP's support document on error 13 paper jam:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=25484&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=25484&objectID=bpl01309

According to my "HP LaserJet Family Quick Reference Service Guide, Vol. 1", on page 38 and 39:

40 Error (data transfer error)

(among other possibilities, these two seem most applicable:)

- The MIO card is unseated or defective - remove, reseat, or replace the MIO card

- An abnormal connection break occurred while transferring data from the computer.

The manual further indicates that a 40.1 means the MIO in slot 1 has the problem; a 40.2 means the MIO in slot 2 has the problem.

I'd try turning the printer off and reseating the card, and if that doesn't work, try swapping it out if you can.

let me know if you need further assistance, Joe

If it helps.please rate this solution.

I have Kyocera Copier that is trying to print a fax and it keeps coming up JAM 40. How do I fix this?

JAM 40 is a fuser jam. Remove the process unit and make sure there is no paper there. Open the back cover and make sure there is no paper there. Turn the machine off then back on. If you are still geting Jam 40 then you have a bad sensor or similar issue.

Thank you contacting FixYa for your printer inquiry.
This error is associated with either a sheet of paper blocking the paper path or a partial piece of paper that blocks path or trips a sensor. The printer will usually throw up a error code 13.XX on the display and the XX is a number that will indicate where in the paper path this error most probably occurred. Just follow the steps for your error on the below chart.
This link will take you to the user guide which will be helpfull identifying components and providing guidelines for most of the helpful hints and things you will need to know about this printer.

HP Laserjet Error Codes 0 - 19 Message on printer Display Panel What it means. What to do. 13.XX PAPER JAM [LOCATION] Media is jammed at the specified location (and possibly at other locations). If the message persists after all jams have been cleared, a sensor or sensor lever might be stuck or broken. For all jam messages, do the following: 1. Remove jammed print media from the specified location. Check the entire paper path for other pieces of media in the path. 2. Open and close the top cover to clear the message. 3. Check sensors and flags in the paper path for proper operation. 3.0 PAPER JAM [LOCATION] A non-specific paper jam occurred. 1. Remove jammed media from the specified location. 2. Verify the paper tray is fully closed. 3. Inspect and/or replace the feed and separation rollers. 4. Ensure there is no obstruction in the path, such as a torn piece of paper. 5. Open and close the top cover to clear the message. 6. Check sensors and flags for proper operation. 13.1 PAPER JAM OPEN INPUT TRAYS Paper-delay jam at paperfeed area. 1. Ensure that paper trays are loaded and adjusted properly so media can feed from the tray. It might be necessary to reduce the stack height of media in the tray. 2. Check the input area for obstructions such as media in the path. Also check to see if the registration assembly damaged or unseated. 3. Replace any defective sensors or flags. 4. Verify the media meets the specifications. 5. Check the pickup feed and separation rollers for unusual wear. Replace as needed. 6. 7. Place one of your hands under the LCD unit and into the opening of where the paper tray was.

8. Using your hand, lift the front of the machine approximately 6 inches off the surface.

9. Look inside the tray areas roof of the machine and you should see a row of black rollers. See picture below.

10. Look in-between each of the black rollers for a piece of stuck scrap paper. (A flash light may need to be used if you are having trouble locating the paper scrap).

11. Using a pair of tweezers, the paper scrap can be easily removed from the exit rollers.

12. Place the machine gently down onto the surface.

- If paper scraps were found and removed from the machine, continue to STEP 13.

- If no paper scraps were found inside the machine, the paper in the tray may be causing the issue. If the paper is slightly curled, the print head will catch the edge of the paper and tear it. To resolve the issue, the paper must be replaced.

- If you do not have replacement paper, follow the rest of this solution, after you have replaced the paper.

- If you replaced the paper, continue to STEP 13.

13. Put the paper tray back into the machine.

Printer error shows paper jam at paper tray and printer stops after printing 3 or 4 pages. I open and close the top access and printing resumes for 3 or 4 more pages...stops and shows paper jam at feed...

Try two things:

Fan the paper before placing in the tray.

Raise the humidity in the room to at least 40% to avoid electrostatic sticking of the paper. Store paper in 40% humidity area.

Paper jam and still won't print

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Before you can clear the error message, you must locate where in the unit the paper is jammed.

Unplug the machine for safety. Now follow these instructions based on where the paper jam is located.

1. Pull the paper tray out of the machine.
2. Pull out the jammed paper.
3. Reset the machine by opening the Upper Jam Clear Cover and then closing it.

If you cannot remove the jammed paper from the front of the machine, or the error message still appears on the LCD after you have removed the jammed paper, please go to the next step.

4. Remove the Lower Jam Clear Cover from the back of the machine. Pull the jammed paper out of the machine.

5. Put the Lower Jam Clear Cover back on. Make sure the cover is set properly.

6. Open the Upper Jam Clear Cover. Make sure that there is no jammed paper left in the corners of the machine.
Note: If the paper is jammed under the print head, unplug the machine from the power source, then move the print head to take out the paper. 7. Close the Upper Jam Clear Cover.

8. Close the output paper tray cover and slide it forward, then push the paper tray firmly back into the machine. While holding the paper tray in place, pull out the paper support until it clicks and unfold the paper support flap.

Please do rate the solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Error 13-jam paper HP Laser 4+

HP LaserJet 4, 4m, 4 Plus and 4m Plus Series Printers - False Error Message 13 PAPER JAM ISSUE: After clearing all jammed paper from the HP LaserJet 4, 4m, 4 Plus, or 4m Plus series printer, the display still reads 13 Paper Jam . Even after cycling the power off and then back on, the error remains. SOLUTION: Open the rear door of the printer. There is a paper sensor near the upper right hand corner of the fusing assembly (just below the right edge of the long yellow warning sticker on the fuser) that can cause paper jam error messages even when there is no jammed paper in the printer. Toggle the thin black plastic lever up and down to make sure it is not stuck or sticky. The lever should be in the down position before closing the back of the printer. If the lever is stuck or missing, the printer will generate a false paper jam message. Hope it will help you !

Error codes starting with 13 usually indicate paper jams. Open all the doors on the printer and remove any removable modules and check for stuck paper.
