Re: Cannot get my thinkpad 770ed to do anything..
Take the battery out and see if the system works on AC only. Sounds like you need to reinstall the OS and you may have an issue with the thinkpad not keeping the time and date. This is related to the other battery called the CMOS battery. This keeps your date and time accurate when the system is turn off.
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

IBM ThinkPad April 25, 1999 CardWorks for Windows 95 Driver Version 5.32.25.VPR ====================================================================== ********************************************************************** WARNING: THIS DRIVER CAN ONLY BE USED WITH THE MACHINES ON THE SUPPORTED LIST ON THIS PAGE. This package enables or updates the PC Card function of the following ThinkPad computers: - ThinkPad 380, 380D, 380E, 380ED, 380XD, 380Z - ThinkPad 385D, 385ED, 385XD - ThinkPad 560X, 560Z - ThinkPad 570 - ThinkPad 600, 600E - ThinkPad 770, 770E, 770ED, 770X, 770Z
As soon as anything appears on screen after power-on, press F1 (keep clicking it until the BIOS setup screen appears). The first option on the list is Date + Time, click on that, and enter correct date/time. Then press F10 to accept + reboot. If this error happens again, it means that the CMOS battery (which keeps your settings alive) has died; it is cheap + easy to replace, however you have an R40 model, and I avoid working on Rxx series so that job may be harder. I could point you to the R40 service manual, which is very good to dis-assemble that laptop (it is necessary to lift keyboard to get to CMOS battery, which involves removing some screws from the bottom.
HMM, your kind of screwed I have worked on the thinkpads in my shop b4 and there is no work around the bios password. Either you need to remember your password or get ahold of who you bought it from. IBM has a military contract and they are not allowed to set a backdoor on the thinkpads according to that contract. The only thing they can do is replace the motherboard its a crock but thats the way it is. I would just but buy a new laptop that motherboard is $249 plus labor.
This error message is generated when the BIOS Date and Time is incorrect. Go into the BIOS configuration to change the Date and Time. When you reboot and still get the same error message then the BIOS battery is flat and needs to be replaced and the Date and Time setting needs to be change to the current Date and Time after replacing the battery.
If you cannot get into the BIOS configuration (press F1 on bootup) or you get a lock icon in the top LH corner of the screen, this is a Power on Password symbol, enter the passsword to bootup the laptop and then press F1 to get into the BIOS configuration.
Hi there. If the beep is a short beep then there is nothing wrong with the PC, just enter the bios utility, set the date and time, save the changes and exit the bios. The computer will restart and should boot straight through to windows. Please post back if you need anymore help or advice.
Try to restart your laptop, when you see the IBM Thinkpad logo press F8 several times until it gives you a black screen menu with some option. Try the "use last known good configuration" first and see if it works, otherwise try to access in safe mode. Once you're in, try a system restore, and bring the computer back to a date you think it should work.
To access System restore you go unser start - programs - accessories - system tools.
I have the same computer and I know exactly what you talikng about, the Off>On screen you get, the computer wants you to turn it off and then back on again, Just push the button to turn it off and then hit the button to turn it on, don't wait to long between turning it off and on again. it should just be a quick off and quick on.
Are you a computer whizz? (do you know a lot about computers like me?)
Could be the Cpu fan (Central Processing Unit)
That could be lethal to the laptop.
Just as well it's a IBM other wise . . .
As for the error it means the time and date are not set.
soloution: run the bios setup utillity to reset time and date.
