Do you have a HDMI jack on your TV? it looks just like the blue/graphics/monitor jack on your laptop. If so use it to connect and you should be able to use your tv as a monitor. (if you tv came with the HDMI cable?, if not you can purchase one ez enough from Radio Shack)
Check your users manual for directions on how to use the remote to get it to that function. My Hansphree TV I have to put it on AUX to use my laptop hooked to it and see my TV as my lappy monitor.

If you Sony TV has a VGA video input socket then connect a VGA video cable to the TV and the other end of the VGA cable to the VGA video connector on your laptop. Power up the TV and go to the Input selection Menu and select PC connector then boot up your laptop and the Windows video data will automatically to the TV. You can toggle between the TV the LCD or both by pressing Fn key plus F4 key.
If it was playing the video fine initially, there should be no reason for that to change. Most likely the video card on the laptop is overheating or dying, which results in the change in colors. I fix laptops at my computer repair shop, and most are HP Pavilion DV6000 and DV9000, and they are notorious for having bad video chips on the motherboards. If it is still under warranty I would back up your data from the hard drive then send it in to HP to have fixed or replaced. If it isn't under warranty I would try to connect your tv using just a VGA cable, and see if the same thing happens. If it does, you have a bad video card. If it doesn't happen then you may still have a bad video card, it's just that the VGA signal isn't as high powered/high resolution so your card doesn't get pushed hard enough to malfunction. Try the VGA cable and let me know how it works.
The first thing you need to do is after you connect the cables.. hold down the fn key and press f4. this should bring the screen on the tv. make sure your tv is in the AV mode. if not try with a vga cable.
However if it still does not show up then probably the display drivers are corrupted. reinstall the drivers from the recovery manager > advance options > hardware driver installation.
it's only a partial solution but channel 3 or 4.... or your tv may have settings for dvd or other. look at the remote. try hooking it up again and changing from regular cable to dvd or the other setting (can't think of it at the moment)
Only if the tv is vga compatible. If it has a vga port then it is, a vga port is round and should be marked vga. Then you will need a vga cable, Walmart carries them. Keep in mind that tv's are made to be tv's not computer monitors, you may not get the resolution you want or are expecting.
