How to change colors (by 2 users)

By Chandler - usenet poster

When I'm on the TiVo Central screen the background is green. I've seen
Directv units and the same screen background color is blue. Does anyone know
of a way to change the colors? I like the blue better than the green, I've
looked through all of my hacks but so far haven't found anything.
Thanks,
neondon

Ah - on a Series2 you use the 'Display' button - also labeled 'Info'
on some remotes I believe.

Just about never - what do you use it for? It doesn't seem to serve
much of a purpose to me.

The Sony Series1 and Philips Series1 were internally *identical*.
Same design, built on the same line at the same factory. The software
was almost completely the same too, with the additions of the Sony
special features for VCR control. Sony didn't have anything to do
with the design really, other than the look and feel of the casing.

Sounds like you've got a freaky unit - I can assure you these things
don't happen to my units, or any of the Series2 units that many of my
friends own.

And everyone I know who has an S1 and an S2 says the S2 is faster.

I've had a Series2 since February 2002. I've had 2.0, 3.0, 3.2, and
now 4.0 software. I had a Series1 from March 2002 through December
2002 which had 2.5 and 3.0 on it. I got my second Series2 in
December, just before I sold the Series1.

My first Series2 has an added 120GB drive, the Series1 had two 120GB
drives and TurboNet. Currently both Series2 units have HMO and are
using Ethernet via USB adapters.

And you can.

The Series2 has a v.90 modem, the Series1 has a v.34 modem. You could
have a marginal phone line that is just enough for the v.90 to try to
negotiate without falling back - it happens. It is a possibility.
Isn't there a special prefix code to force the modem to a lower speed?
I'd check TiVoCommunity, but that's down...

That's bullshit, voltage can fluctuate in *any* electrical current.
Whoever told you that is a moron.

What else are they going to do to test a modem problem? Call them on
a cell phone or another line or something if you don't want to be
disconnected.

That's exactly what they said it'd do.

Incorrect. Read the user agreement again. It is NOT part of the
unit, it is part of the TiVo service. Those features don't work when
the unit is unboxed until the service is activated, and they stop
working when the service is deactivated.

Season Passes are *absolutely* part of the TiVo service - a core
feature of it in fact. No TiVo Service, no Season Passes - period.
Even the new 'TiVo Basic' service that was just announced will NOT
have Season Passes - only the paid service does.

You only had Season Passes on the unit because it had been on TiVo's
Service. And here's a tip - SPs ONLY work with guide data. Period.
Once your guide data had run out, they would've stopped working - even
if you hadn't called again. No Guide Data means no season passes, no
wishlists, no searching, etc. Without guide data the unit becomes
*strictly* time and channel based. No service, no guide data, no
advanced features. Just like they are out of the box before they're
subscribed.

Nope.

No, you don't have a right to them. Those features were not in the
machine you bought. And they didn't come from Sony. Sony's
arrangement with TiVo is that Sony sells the HW, but the service
arrangement is between the customer and TiVo. Sony does not enable
those features without the service.

TiVo only disable the functions that weren't there until you got their
service - you stopped paying for the service, OF COURSE they're going
to go away!

Ok, so you don't understand how the networking works. The TiVo has
drivers for network adapters, not cable modems. The TiVo supports
Ethernet networking, that's all they ever claimed it supported.
Usually the only thing you'll find that can speak to a cable modem
over USB is a PC - and then only if you install special drivers for
that cable modem. And most cable modems don't have USB ports - they
just have Ethernet ports. So expecting TiVo to support the various,
non-standard cable modem USB interfaces isn't reasonable.

Out of all that, the only valid complaint I think you have is about
the modem not working. And if your unit is auto-reverting settings,
etc, then perhaps there is a fault in the unit.

I feel the other way. I had a Philips S1 and a TiVo S2 - now I have
two TiVo S2s, and I'm happy. The units are faster, I have HMO on
both, and I the TiVo 'peanut' remotes are my favorite out of the stack
of remotes that I have. They fit my hand great, and I rarely need a
button at the 'bottom', except maybe 'clear' when cleaning up Now
Playing.

I'd rather have the Series2.

On the remote, to each his own, but how often do you use the enter/last
button. Almost impossible to use without some juggling. I don't even use
the Tivo remote unless I am using Tivo functions that require it. I use the
Cable remote for anything else, but again, to each his own. What I don't
like is TIVO's arrogance and their mistaken belief or intentional lie that
they can build a better device than Sony can. I don't know about your old
Phillips, but the very first thing I noticed when I hooked up the Tivo 2 was
the slowness when compared to the Sony Tivo 1. Some things in TIVO 2 don't
even function. Try changing the length of time the Tivo banners remain on
screenit doesn't change at all. Try setting the recording quality
preference you wantit will shortly revert back to best which seems to
be a default.

What really ticked me off about TIVO is what they told me when I asked what
I would do with the Sony device if I switched my lifetime (of the unit)
contract from the Sony to the Tivo 2. I was told I could sell it or I could
use it as a manual DVR with no programming information. Upon receiving the
Tivo 2, I set it up, disconnected the phone line from the Sony and connected
the Tivo 2 to the phone and called to have my service started. It went fine,
and what I didn't realize was that because I already disconnected the Sony,
they had no access to sabotage it as they have now done.

When I saw that the daily phone calls were failing almost all of the time, I
called Tivo. They assured me that it couldn't be their wonderful machine,
it had to be my phone line. I insisted it couldn't be because the 2 was
connected to the exact same jack that the Sony had used trouble free for
more than a year. They of course knew they had the upper hand and insisted
it was my phone line. I called the company and dutifully reported that Tivo
had informed me that my line was being ravaged by "voltage fluctuation
caused by crossed line noise". The phone company checked my lines and said
they were perfect and gave me a little tip. Voltage fluctuation can only
occur with alternating current, and the voltage on my phone line is DC.

Called Tivo again and got another run around. They had me disconnect every
phone in my house and plug Tivo into the main jack. I did, Tivo didn't
connect again. Notice one thing here, each techie had me do something that
required me to hang up the phone, thus relieving the techie of the
possibility he might have to admit Tivo was Trashothe machine, not the
serviceI have nothing but praise for what a properly functioning Tivo
will do. Then I made a major error. After watching my available
programming dwindle to 5 days and Tivo denying the problem is their
equipment, I reconnected the Sony to the exact same jack just to see what
happened and it connected with no problem. I was surprised to see it was
actually downloading data, I just didn't realize it was destructive data.

What that fateful download did was to covert my perfectly working Sony Tivo
dumb DVR into a black paperweight almost. I had it set to manually record
season passes by date, time, and station. If I wanted to change the season
pass, I used Season pass Mgr to change recording options or to cancel a
season pass. Now, I can't do that anymore, I can only see a message that
says I must have a contract to use Tivo functionality. Fine, I knew that,
but changing or canceling season passes is NOT Tivo functionality, it is a
function of the Sony equipment I bought and could have used forever if I
never connected it to the "Tivo Terminator". When I look at the To Do list,
I see only scheduled recording times, no program info. That is Tivo
functionality, so I have to be satisfied with that, BUTif I look in
"View Recording History", I also see times only and that certain scheduled
recordings will not be recorded.

If I try to see WHY it isn't being recorded, I am told I can'tagain, no
Tivo contract. If a scheduled program is not to be recorded, it can only
because I either cancelled it or I manually scheduled another recording over
it. Telling me that information is NOT Tivo functionality. it is a simple
function of the machine I bought from Sony. Remember, the lying Tivo
shyster who talked me into the switch, said I could still use it to manually
record, I just wouldn't have any programming info. She didn't tell me that
given the chance, Tivo would disable functions on a machine I bought from
Sony, functions I have every right to use so long as I am willing to do
everything MANUALLY.

Tivo has yet to fix the problem with denials their only response. I now have
to force the daily call each day by trying to connect several times until
one finally succeeds. Tivo also sent me the 4.0 software so I could get the
programming direct through my cable modem. OK, the software installed, so I
hooked a USB cable from my cable modem direct into the Tivo box. That
should have given it direct access to an always open line just as the phone
should have provided, but it didn't work either. Called Tivo and they said
I have to spend another $70 or $80 bucks for a router that I have no other
need for, and I don't need to spend that money to save on one single daily
phone call that wouldn't cost me that much in 20 years of calls.. As for
HMO, I don't need that either. There is only one TV in my house, don't need
more, and I can see everything HMO sends to my TV on my monitor. Maybe the
photos won't be big enough to see the mucous dingleberries on uncle Joe's
nose hairs, but I can still make him out OK.

BTW, I am in Brooklyn, NY and ALL of our phone lines are in underground
conduits, so we rarely if ever experience bad connections. The last time
there was a major breakdown of phone service in NYC was a few years ago, a
warm sunny Tuesday morning in September, 09/11/01 to be exact. If you are
still reading this, you probably could use a nap right about now, I am a bit
carpal tunneled out myself right now.

Don't know if this is the answer or not, but I have a Sony Tivo1 and a Tivo
made Tivo2. Tivo1 background is blue, and Tivo2 is green.

BTW, Sony Tivo1 is a great machine, but Tivo2 made by Tivo is total JUNK,
most undependable machine I ever owned. Who ever made the remote should
also be horsewhipped. Most times when you need to use 2 buttons in
sequence, the buttons are at opposite ends of the 81/2 inch long remote.
Worse thing I ever did was to get fooled into switching my lifetime contract
from Tivo1 to Tivo2. They told me I would be able to use the Tivo1 but just
would not have any programming information. Sort of do, but they force you
watch and clear notices that you do not have a Tivo contract, and that there
is no program information available and you must make a daily call. They
make it as annoying as possible to use even after changing the contract and
telling you it will work just like a DVR. They didn't say it was the DVR
from hell.
