It may be a fan but its more likely the color wheel assembly. This is a common issue with these TVs. You can probably locate a company that sells them advertizing on this site. Wheels are in the $100-200 range. Its not tto difficult to replace but if you're not too comfortable with a bit of disassembly and disconnecting plug connectors and the like contact a local Samsung service center. The repair will cost $350-500.

Good Luck!

TV MAKES A HUMMING NOICE WHEN TV IS ON, WHEN TOUCHING THE BACK OF TV WHERE NOISE COMING FROM IT IS VERY HOT. IT WILL THEN GET LOUDER AND EVENTUALLY CUT OFF TV. TV WILL COME BACK ON AFTER IT COOLS OFF. WHAT...

It is either the color wheel or a fan. To isolate the color wheel, remove the back cover and make sure you put the lamp door back on so that the door interlock switch is activated. Turn the set on and get the picture and humming noise going. Just to left of the rear fan there are some wires. One is a really flat brown or rust colored ribbon cable that plugs in to a board on the left of the wires. This is the color wheel ribbon. When you unplug it the set will keep going for a moment or two but if the noise stops, you will know it is the color wheel. Don't be alarmed because the set shuts off with this ribbon disconnected. Just let all the fans stop (for proper cooling) and then unplug the set for 5-10 minutes. If the humming did not stop you have a bad fan motor. Plug the little ribbon back in while you have the set uplugged. Plug the set back in and turn it back on and try to isolate which fan it is, if it is a fan. If you determine it is a color wheel, the light engine will have to be replaced as Toshiba does not offer just the color wheel. If it is a fan, those can be replaced. I hope this helps. Let me know what you find and thanks for using fixya.

Humming sound when switching on TV

It is very possible it could be the fan. Do check fan and venting to make sure it is not full of dust and getting plenty of air.

Cooling Fan noise

Another possible source for the noise is the Color Wheel. It is spinning at a high rate and the noise will get louder as it wears out. You should be able to replace the part yourself. Take a look here first: http://www.fixya.com/support/t372149-samsung_hlp4663w_color_wheel_replacement

Tv makes humming noise when on. how can I eliminate or reduce the nose?

Some of the larger TV's are DISH ready, meaning that they have the tuner inside for SAT TV. The SAT tuners often have an internal fan that makes a humming noise. If it sounds like something other than that, you might have a bad component in your sound circuit that allows 60 HZ hum through the speakers.

If it is a rear projection LCG TV it has a fan in it to cool the bulb. You will hear the fan if you listen closely. It usually cannot be heard over the volume.

The fluorescent bulb and electronics inside make humming sound naturally. Kinda like when you turn on a lamp, and some lamps make a low humming sound.
