My Polycom Soundstation Premier has an analog 8 wire plug. How can I get it to my 4 wire analog phone jack? A pinout solution would suffice. Thanks, Ken

The 8 wires plug must be a network cable, cannot be connected to a phone RJ11, it is a different kind of signal.

The 8 pin must be an RJ45 ethernet terminator, that looks like a phone RJ11 connector, but it is a different thing.

That is not analog , it is an ethernet cable and there is no way to connect a phone cable to that one.

If I am wrong , please explain the problem with more detail.

4. Trim wires to desired length.
Note:
If the wires are too long the plug will not
crimp onto the insulation for strength.
5. Slide wires all the way into the plug.
Make sure not to disrupt the color
scheme.
6. Crimp plug.
7. Repeat steps 1-6 for the other end.
8. Test wire using optional test equipment

I have been on many sites with Cat 5 systems. What I cannot understand is why are the sockets numbered oddly i.e 1--6 2--7 3--8 etc. Instead of 1--2 3--4 5--6 etc.

Not sure if I understand your question.
Cat 5 (and higher) cables consist of four twisted pairs. The idea is, that disturbances by magnetic fields compensate each other this way. I suppose that the arrangement of the wire on the plugs and jack come from good ols analogue days, where the telephone-call was only on two wires (=one pair). To keep it as undisturbed as possible, the center of the plug (pins 4 and 5 on a rj45) was used. The next pair was spread over them and therefore used pins 3 and 6. Pair three was put on pin 1 and 2, and pai four on pins 7 and 8.

The cable color in the jack box is independent to the jack box. It does not matter what the color of the wires are in the actual cable. The cable needs to have the same colors, in the same order, on both ends to work correctly.

Cat5 has eight wires, anything less is for telephone. Your cabe is for telephone if it has 4 wires. Either return the cable and get 8-wire cat5 or go to another store for your cat5 wire.

Against my better judgement, because crimping doesn't work half the time, here's the color code.

A 4-pair Cat-5e or 6 cable has BLUE, ORANGE, GREEN, and BROWN pairs. The ones with the most white are called Tip. In a 568B wiring scheme, they go 54361278.

or, like this

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

wo ow wg bw wb gw wbr brw

Data is actually carried on pins 1 2 3 and 6.

If you wire the other end of the cable the same way as above, it's called a straight through cable.

If you reverse the orange and green pairs, it's a crossover cable. This is also the pattern for 568A

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
wg gw wo bw wb ow wbr brw

Getting the wires to untwist and behave is half the fun, that's why we use special plugs when we absolutely have to crimp. Otherwise, we use a jack and patch cord.
