You can choose either.
If you select duplicate, it is useful when you have to give a speech or lecture and you are facing the audience because the projected image is behind you and you can also see the image on the laptop when you face the audience.

When I want to do a presentation, my computer could not project the image on the LCD projector. My laptop is Compaq 510.

You need to press the Function key (fn) and the corresponding "F key" with the projector hooked up and powered on. Such as F7
The F key should either have a picture of a monitor or the words LCD on it in the same color as the fn key. Usually it is blue.

Screen image is distorted small using Epson EMP 821 with Latitude D620

Check Epson"s support site to see if there is a driver for the projector. Some projectors require a driver for the visual clarity, and lots of times the driver disc doesn't come with the projector, go figure, and don't ask me why.

Projector Picture Size

It also depends on the Graphic caru d that you have in the notebook, as ATI, Nvidia and intel all handel the output slightly differently. After you project image out to projecter, you have option to set,it is in display setting , under resolution .You can choose to clone or run two independent displays, ie the notebook at its natural 15.4" display, and then the projector at what ever its natural res is. To get this to work properly you need to do this in extended mode, not clone mode. This has advantages and disadvantages depending on your view point
Hope this helps a bit

This is a common problem with an application called intellitype or Intellitype Pro.

You can turn off zoom in the intelliType application. This will fix it.
