Getting an old Dell Dimension to recognize a WD Passport

I am trying to transfer e-mails from a Dell Dimension 4500 (running Windows XP Pro) to a WD Passport 250 GB. I connected the Passport, then started the computer. The computer recognizes that the Passport is attached and says it's working properly, but I can't find it on My Computer. Device Manager lists the location of the Passport as "Location 0." How can I run Sync on this computer?

In the end, I assigned a different drive letter to the device and it worked.

There's a lot of info out there on how to assign a letter. Here's one link:

I tried to format my 500gb WD passport essential with exfat using windows 7 for my mediastar pvr . Now neither pvr or windows 7 can see the harddrive

Windows 7 does _NOT_ support 'exfat' drives, as you have found out.
You can "format" the drive, to use 'FAT32' or 'NTFS' file-systems.

Xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

ok i had to do this with my mothers computer, when you delete a partition, you have to make a new one in its place, i say put in the xp cd, then say to create a whole new windows installation, when it asks you to choose a partition, delete all partitions, then make a new one, your choice to size but keep it enough to at least install windows onto it, then after that just reformat that partition and install windows, that should fix it.

Missing Windows XP Product Key-Need to Reinstall/Repair XP

I'm assuming you have quite a lot of computer savvy??? You'll need to access that drive and get the original key off it. Try connecting the drive to another pc and see if you can get to the Windows folder. Once there, use Jellybean Keyfinder to navigate to the Windows folder in that drive and take note of the OS key. From there you can reformat and use the existing key.

Open Filer is a better option.

Any chance you can simplify the explanation as to what the issue is.

My old computer does not recognize my new 250gb wd passport I get an error that my Z drive is not logged on

Are you sure your 'old' computer has USB 2.0 support and not only USB 1.1?
You can try accessing the BIOS of the computer and see if you can change the USB version there.

Once it is recognized, Windows (XP?) should recognize it and install the drivers. If you are running an older OS, you probably need to install drivers for it first. But those would come with the drive (on a CD maybe).
