Question about Sony KP-65WV700 65" Rear Projection HDTV

9 Answers

Projection screen goes black every 30 minutes but sound stays on. Power off returns the display but reoccurs more often than not once it starts. Power off for 8 or more hours helps to extend the time before it goes again. Seems like after it is on for a couple of hours the screen goes dark. Sometimes happens infrequently but seems to be increasing and is more persistent - probably something is slowly going. Would like to know what potential part replacements may correct problem - with such a large unit - Sony 65 inch - it is a major expense to have transported. Would like to DIY fix.

The problem does occur with the menu on although once I believe it did come back on as I coincidentally hit menu as it went out. I have tried several attempts at testing the occurance around pressing the menu key. I dont know from your answer what I would do to correct the problem _ i would certainly need more of an explanatin than what was provided. One other point - the display comes on with time in lower right and video signal in top left right befor it goes off sometimes.

I am pretty certain it blinks 5 times then stops for a short period and then blinks 5 times again - it will stay in this mode indefinately with only the sound on until powered off then on again. The longer I wait to turn it back on the longer it seems to play before reoccurring. Sometimes it is as short as 10 minutes and other times it stays on for hours.

It does sound like thermal shut-down. if you have access to the power supply board with the tv powered on ... the next time it shuts off blow compressed air (you can even use a straw) in the area of the power supply... if it come back on you have located the area at fault. you can narrow it down further after you have located the general area.

Two cautions tho... remember to be careful when the set is plugged in and powered up as there would be lethal currents there.
And if you use a straw (tho i don't really recommend that method) be careful of any moisture when you blow air onto the board

Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blankingtry turning up screen slightly. its necessary to replace the mentioned faulty components in numbers.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Based on your description, it would appear to be a heat related issue more particularly on the solder joints of the small squarish printed circuit board(s) at the rear of the CRTs. Common faults are cold solder specially on the pins of the transistors/ICs. Since the Sony works still, then I doubt if any component is defective. Repairs would relatively be easy, re-solder. What would be more challenging is getting access to these boards.

This of course requires opening the TV unit if you are considering a DIY (do-it-yourself), familiarity with electronic components & circuitry, use of a DVM/VOM and a soldering iron. It would be to your advantage access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings. Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY, then perhaps your best bet would be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Hi there, this is an isolated issue with the logic board. You will have to target the input side of this board, specifically the componet/hdmi/rgb,dvi input section. there may be a minor separation that has occurred over time due to poor soldering during the manufacturing of your set. you can remove the main logic board and preform a break point test to find this separation. again, this is isolated but, you will have to remove the entire board to do the test. when removed, look for lose or breakage where the input sockets are located on this board. you can also wiggle the input jacks/cabels to test for this looseness as well.

That means either bad video chipset on DMD board and testing convergence board, or incorrect IK blanking.

Unless you are an experienced electronic repairer better to call service to fix the problem.

If you are using component cables try using hdmi cable and then check.

    Thanks for update.
It is AKB (incorrect white balance) problem and can be set easily if you have little experience of TV repair or can follow instructions.
Let me know to proceed further.

Since you rejected my solution so I'm not sure when you will see my following comments to resolve TV problem.
As I said TV needs correct white balance to present picture and to do so you need to adjust Screen Volts of all 3 CRTs in TV.
Please take off front low cover of TV and find below mentioned (image) HV block and adjust SCREEN voltage of RED-GREEN-BLUE controls.

You need to adjust each knob slightly until you see correspondence color little bright at screen then slightly turn it reverse.

Hi,
Check with the TV menu opened that it goes as well.
This seems an issue with the convergence IC.

TV screen goes blank but power stays on

Sounds like the CRTs are going into protective blanking due to the vertical output ic needing to be resolderd. Try resoldering the vertical IC that may possibly fix the issue.

My Sony comes on then both sound and picture goes black.

After being on a little while, the screen goes black (no audio as well) for 20 to 30 seconds. Green light stays on. Then, picture comes back on and takes a couple of seconds to get up to full brightness. About 5 seconds or so after the video comes back, the audio returns.

Until this morning, has only happened a couple of times a day, now happening more often. About 3 times in last 20 minutes.

KDF-E55A20 is about 3 years old.
