SOURCE: goto engase pto it kills motor

As a safety feature, tractor PTO's will kill the tractor if the PTO is on and you are not on the seat. Or rather, it thinks you are not on the seat.

Under the seat is a switch that is active when you sit on the seat. To test it, try disconnecting the plug that is on it. Does the PTO work now? Replace the switch. If not, take a piece of wire and connect the 2 terminals on the tractor (not the seat) side of the connector and try it again. Does the PTO work now? Yes? replace switch. No? There is yet another safety feature not working. Check your owners manual to find out what safety switches turn off the tractor when the PTO is on, and verify that they are working correctly.

Note that while defeating one of these switches will allow the tractor to run, these features were developed after many funerals and re-attaching many body parts. Do not defeat them. Keep them working.

SOURCE: Engine Pulley 660 MTD Yard Machines

make sure the narrow side of the belt goes in the pulley; you may have the wrong belt; make sure all the pulleys for that belt are the same height , if one is higher than the others that may be the problem

SOURCE: MTD Lawn Tractor: Constantly shredding deck belt...

I have the exact same model MTD tractor with same problem. It began when the bolt that extends through the idler arm assembly broke and subsequently damaged the pulley. Upon examination of the broken bolt, I found that the threaded end that extends below the deck is significantly smaller that the rest of the bolt. I got a larger bolt with the same size threads, bored out the hole through the deck and it made the whole idler assembly much stronger. the deck still has some vibration and some unusual belt harmonics, but it appears to be working. Compared to most other tractors of this size, this deck is very complicated.

Yard Machine MTD. Is front pulley supposed to move?

check to see if there is an adjustment that prevents that happening so that when the deck is fully raised it is against stops that leave clearance to the pulley and belt

How do you replace the deck belt on a 1998 mtd deck #14aj839p131

You don't need a diagram to put your belt on. The v part of the belt goes in the v part of the pulley. If the pulley isn't a v pulley the back side of the belt goes against it.

When replacing double stack drive/deck pulley, how do you keep it from scraping deck/20 hp,46 cut,02 model, yard machines??!

MTD part number 950-0960A This is a spacer that goes under the pulley stack. It should help to keep the pulley from rubbing on the deck. Hope this helps.

Those pulleys most likely have part numbers stamped on them. If not you can take the pulleys to a lawn mower or small engine repair shop and they can match them up with pulleys they have in stock.

How to put on drive belt onmy mower

Based on experience with MTD and AYP products: 1) remove mower to deck belt, 2) remove deck, 3) have helper press brake pedal down which puts slack in drive belt, 4) pull drive belt first from front engine pulley or rear transmission pulley then remove entirely. Reinstall in reverse order.

CAVEATS 1) If a pulley is grooved then the narrow part of the belt goes into it, if the pulley is flat then most likely the back of the belt goes against it in a tensioning function. 2) There are often guides or keepers which hold the belt in place, these can be hard to see and if the belt is not routed inside them it may well not work or hop out under load.

How do i change the drive belt on my mtd riding mower? Do i need to drop the deck?

You might not have to drop the deck. Take a look at where the drive belt is mounted and remove only what has be be removed. At the front of the engine pulley there are probably two long bolts that have to be removed so the belt will come off and come on. Then when you put the new belt on put inside of belt (V) in to the pulley and flat part of belt up against any idler's. When on properly it should be snug.

Good luck

TEAC model A1500 tape recorder

What i did to solve this problem on my A-1500 was to remove the tension arm, the pinch roller and the front face holding screws , pull off the rubber faces from the reel hubs and remove them, remove the front metal face plate... in back remove the wood backing panel... inside the deck rear, remove, (without letting them fall into the mechanism) 4 screws that anchor the heavy front cast piece that holds the capstan flywheel...carefully lift the cast piece that holds the flywheel. away from the deck face just enough to allow the old belt be removed, and the new one installed...ensure the belt is installed and goes all around the flywheel..and is not pinched when you push the casting back against the deck face and reinstall the 4 rear anchor screws. place the belt around the upper drive motor pulley wheel.. small diameter part on motor pulley and large diameter part on flywheel for users of 60 hz. Ensure 60hz is selected on switch..or 50hz if that is what you need.(for 50hz ensure belt is on large motor pulley part and smaller flywheel diameter part. with deck lying down or leaning, place a few drops of light lube oil into the felt at the bearing hole for the flywheel. Give the deck a test playback before completely reassembling and putting all the parts back where they were.
