Unscrew the 4 torx screws on the back and remove the cover carefully.
Unplug the battery for 30 seconds. plug it back in and re- assemble the unit. Once it comes back on it will give you the chance to re calibrate the digitizer ( or you can now select it from the prefs menu)
If the touchscreen fails to repsond you will need a new digitizer.
You can purchase it from :

Z22 palm handheld touchscreen won't respond - i've done soft reset -- several times -- used the 5 way to bring up the touchscreen -- tapped and nothing happened.

Hi, Try doing a hard reset to see if this will correct the problem.

Hold down the power button and at the same time use the tip of your stylus or any other non sharp item and press the inside the reset hole on the back of your palm.
When you see the Palm power logo appear you can let go of the power button and also the one on the back of you unit.
It will display a message asking if you want to do a hard reset and that it will erase all your data. select yes by hitting the up part of your 5 way button on the bottom of your unit. This is the one you use to navigate around your palm screen. After it resets you wil then be prompted to reset the screen by tapping the targets. If it works great. If not then you have something wrong that needs to be looked at. Before you send it in go to:
www.palm.com.
Select pda and then your model. From there go to the support screen and do a live chat. This is free and they may be able to live you some help. Best wishes.

My (MDA COmpact IV ) has just frozed...

Hi, first of all, you can try to reset your device using your stylus, and this should solve your problem. To reset your device: The reset hole itself is visible once you remove the stylus. It is in the corner where the tip of the stylus would be - and is in red so you cant miss it. Hope this helps.

Sounds like a problem with the digitizer. Mine started out like this and got worse. I have owned my Palm for about 1-1/2 years and at least twice I had to do the following as my touch screen eventually quit working and I couldn't get the digitizer to fix it either. Below is what I have found that works and so far is the only solution. I think this is a bug in the system, but PALM has not yet posted any info or a patch to correct it. Unfortunately, this will erase all your data so be sure to back it up first.

-------------------

Sounds like the digitizer is so far off that the input won't align correctly. This would, most likely, be confirmed if you get any response when you tap the touchscreen (moving cursor, beeping, etc). You'll need to try a soft reset using the little reset tool in the end of your stylus, or a paperclip if you don't have it. Press and hold the reset button inside the unit (located in the back panel) for a few seconds until it chimes and you see the Palm logo. Then try the Digitizer again to calibrate.

Now, if that doesn't work, you may need to factory reset the device. THAT MEANS YOU LOSE ALL YOUR DATA, so do whatever you can to get it backed up. You simply hold the reset, then press and hold the power button for several seconds. Instead of the standard Palm logo you'll see a prompt asking you to press up on the touchpad, on the front of the unit, to reset it to factory default. It will then run you through the initial setup routine to set the date, time and finally calibrate the Digitizer.

Touchscreen no longer works

Well watch this video and after you follow the directions get the screen and find the glass like cover and remove it from the screen bend it in a very lightly way, then put it back on and put the PDA back together and BAM.
