Motor clicks but will not open door

I replaced the gears and the motor will click and hum a little. If I use a plier to turn the shaft coming out of the motor the opener will work a couple of times and then stop working. The yellow light on the back flashes constantly. Any suggestions or advice

Any idea what is causing the motor to overheat? There was no problem until the gears were changed.

Does it simply click then hum? or does it sound like something's moving inside? if you can hear movement inside I'd guess stripped gears. if it just hums I'd have to agree that the chain is bound somewhere. Either way it doesn't sound like it's the electric eyes to me. You should be able to bypass them if you still want to but you have to know if your model uses NO or NC contacts first.

oops, wrong thread... I meant that answer for John_Farrell.

I would check the gear assembly again.. it sounds like something's a little too tight in there. Possibly a gear just not in all the way and the end is rubbing. Good luck

As you push remote door travels a shot distance stops, push button and travels short distance again and again. What is wrong?

Most common failure is internal plastic gear. If we assume that this is the failure i would suggest disconnect the travel engage latch to the non engaged position. Cycle the door and observe if there comes a time that the motor is humming and the chain or latch is not moving. Other than reversing for just a brief moment at the end of travel at no time should the motor hum as turning and the latch feature not move.

What I suspect is happening in the down direction door wants to close and as the gear rotates the gear slips . This repair is not so difficult for the DIY with some mechanic skills and tools. Lots of u-tube showing you how, Parts are available. Confirm the right part for your specific model. Purchase the gear and shaft as an assembly if you not sure about the difficulty. Part prices are all over the map. Shop around. You can buy just the gear a little more difficult to replace.

Electric motor hums but does not open or close garage door

If it just hums and not actually run. Then the trolley is jammed against one of the stop bolts.

I have a Craftsman 1/2 hp, mod # 139.53603. When I press the remote or the panel button there is a humming sound from the motor. I opened the panel on the back and did not see anything out of line, etc. ...

Is the trolley jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor? If so, loosen the chain until the tension is off the trolley and then run the motor until the door is closed. Now locate the up limit on the side of the motor unit and turn this control 2 full turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

I have the Craftsman 1/2 hp Garage Door Opener model 139.53674SRT1. It was working except for needing the main gear changed. Changed the gear and now the opener only clicks and does not actaully open or...

Make sure you put the black cup back on the end of the motor shaft and that it is pressed all the way on. Make sure the RPM sensor is plugged in. If neither of these are the issue, then you probably did not have the motor shaft pushed all the way back when you tightened the coupler after replacing the worm gear. Loosen that coupler up and from the front of the motor (opposite end in which the coupler is on) push the shaft back as far as it will go. Hold it there while you tighten the coupler back up and then try it.

My Liftmaster GDO makes a clicking sound and won't open

See if the trolley is jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. If so remove the bolt and then run the opener until the door is closed. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' control which is on the side of the motor unit. Turn this control 2 complete turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Remember to replace the bolt.

Opener will hum but not engage the drive train.

If the humming you hear is the motor running you need to remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. If it is the motor humming but not turning you have a bad start capacitor which is held by a bracket and is next to the motor.

My door went down so far it flexed the bar and broke from the wal

You seem to have more than one issue.  Why did the bar flex in the first place?  If you have a Craftsman or Liftmaster operator, unplug the operator and remove the cover.  On the motor shaft, carefully, use a pair of pliers or vicegrips to turn the motor shaft in a direction to move the carriage away from the bolt.  This may not be the only problem, the gear assembly part # 41C4220A may need to be replaced.  I'm still wondering why the bar flexed in the first place?

Liftmaster 1/3 HP - humming, but does not open.

It's the gear drive. There are kits online for about $40, if you're semi-handy you can replace it yourself. Search for liftmaster replacement parts.

Clothes dryer ran ok an hour ago - not now

you may have a bushing problem on the drive motor due to dirt or flint. you can check that by removing the belt and try rotating the motor manually. see if it is easy to turn or not.check also the bushing if you can move the shaft sideways..if it has a slack then its a bushing problem. replace the drive motor.
