My dryer would not run.The thermal fuse was open ,so I shorted [bypassed] the fuse . In my stupidity I also shorted out the thermostat heater.the 2 violet wires. At the time I did not realize that the thermostat heater was not a fuse but actually had 5600-8400 ohms of resistance.I pushed the start button, and low and behold the dryer started. However it was short lived because I smelled something burning.I immediately shut off the dryer. It actually smelled like the heater coils where overloaded. With all components back in place, the dryer will not start.

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANY WORK ON IT.
Sounds like your problem may be a broken belt, or the belt may have slipped off of the idler arm pulley or motor.
If you have to replace/reinstall your drum belt and if you have a front loading machine.
Remove the electrical box that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer. Be real careful not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch. Then remove the top of the dryer.
Remove the front of the machine, this will expose the belt and drum, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm bracket with pulley, and motor with pulley. Pay attention to the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt and drum.
Sometimes the belt will slip off of the idler arm or motor causing the drum not to turn.
While you have the drum out, I would recommend that you lubricate the drum rollers at the shaft of the roller with a good grade of machine oil like 3 in One oil. This will save you a problem later with the rollers getting noisy, also check your drum rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them this will cause a noise like a thumping type noise. You will need to replace the drum rollers if they have flat spots on them.

SOURCE: When drying clothes in my gas dryer, you can smell
Hi, from what you describe, it sounds like you may have incomplete combustion, which would leave a residual odor while burning. Check your vent, on the outside where the flap opens and the exhaust leaves the building. Anything blocking that vent may cause an air flow problem. If you have good air flow when the dryer is running, the problem is going to be at the gas valve/burner and may need a professional. In my town, the gas company will come out and check problems like this for no charge, they don't replace parts but are good at troubleshooting. Best of luck.
SOURCE: Replaced thermal fuse, thermostat, and timer,
The problem is in the door switch or the start switch itself. Reconnect the red/white wire to the START switch then disconnect the black wire from the switch and "ground" the switch terminal where the black wire is disconnected from to any part of the dryer cabinet. Plug the dryer in and push the START switch. The START switch is not working and must be replaced if the dryer does not start. The door switch is not working and must be replaced if the dryer starts.
